Sushi Loku

Grayson and I visited Sushi Loku after a nice afternoon walking along the beach down in Kitsilano. Originally we were going to go back and eat in Burnaby but we rarely come down to the West 4th area so we decided to look for a place to eat around here instead.

And Sushi Loku’s brightly lit up sign caught our attention. After spending a few minutes of looking over the Sushi Loku menu, we decided that this would be the perfect place to try out because they offered dishes that neither of us had tried before.

Miso marinated seafood bowl

This bowl resembled a chirashi don but instead of having large slices of sashimi on top, it was topped off with a variety of diced seafood. There was an abundant amount of baby scallops, calamari, tuna, salmon, wakame, salad greens and shrimp on top. I liked that there wasn’t a whole lot of rice in this bowl because it let all the seafood shine through and there was just the right amount of both to make it so that it wasn’t overwhelming with rice when we mixed it all together.

Fillet-o-basa

A lightly seared piece of basa fish topped off with a salad with balsamic vinaigrette and  stir-fried zucchini eggplant, asparagus, and kidney beans. The fish was translucent and perfectly melt in your mouth flakey. Grayson liked it so much that he had a whole piece to himself! I didn’t mind though because this meant that I got to have more of the seafood bowl 🙂 I liked the addition of the ponzu and balsamic because they added acidity.

Tuna tataki roll

This roll reminded us of a dynamite roll because it was filled with shrimp tempura, imitation crab and avocado. The shrimp was fried very well and I don’t say that often. The batter was very crispy and provided a well appreciated textural contrast to the creamy avocado in the roll. It was topped off with tuna tataki and ponzu sauce which added smokey and acidic elements to it! The perfect balanced roll!
