Raisin bread using bread machine

Lil’ bun and I recently dug up our ancient bread machine out of it’s retirement. She had never used or seen a bread machine before so this was an intriguing endeavor for her. We decided we wanted to make some sort of sweet breads, and since we just had a raisin bread recipe lying around, we just decided to use it.

The raisin loaf wasn’t sweet at all even though it was considered a “sweet bread” and it was a little on the dense side but that’s probably because we used whole wheat flour instead of white. But overall, it wasn’t too bad for a first trial run.

Have you tried using a bread machine before? Do you find it yields the same result as making yeast bread by hand? Let me know in the comments!

Recipe

Yields a 1.5lb loaf

  • 1 1/4 cup water (not hot or you’ll kill the yeast)
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 2 tablespoon coconut oil or butter
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/3 cup whole wheat flour (you can use white or bread flour as well)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon dry active or bread machine yeast

Set aside…

  • 1 tablespoon flax seeds
  • 1/4 cup raisins (or any other dried fruits you want in there, dried apricots are a deliciously good choice)

Method

1. Find your neglected bread machine

2. Put all the ingredients inside in the order that they are listed in the ingredients list above EXCEPT the flax seeds and raisins, into loaf box of bread machine.

3. Set your bread machine to it’s appropriate settings, ours was under sweet breads and we chose regular crust. Then, let the bread machine do it’s thing until tells you to add ingredients, at which time you’d pour in the raisins, flax seeds and whatever else you want in your bread.

4. Now, work on another baking project, paint your nails, read a book, make some food, sip some tea, or whatever else you’re into doing because it’ll take a few hours.

5. When it beeps again (ours took 4 hours), it’s done! Make sure you remember to remove the bread loaf man with oven mitts because it’ll be hot. Let cool (if you can wait that long), slice, and serve.

  1. Do you have receipt for making Taiwanese style pineapple bun/bread with filling (raisins or others…) using Bread Machine? Thanks!

    1. I have recipes using Taizhong method for Taiwanese style buns (search Japanese milk bread) You can try to put the ingredients into the bread machine according to your manufacture’s instructions adding the “tangzhong roux” along with the wet ingredients.

  3. For some reason, I figured that you could only make plain breads in these machines. The comments about Taiwanese style breads has me super intrigued now though.

    1. Yes I usually only use it to make the dough then bake it separately in my oven. It’s more tedious of a task but I think it turns out better that way
