I’m not much of a chocoholic myself but every once in a while when the hormones decide to kick in high year, I wouldn’t mind having a piece or five. When I buy chocolate I usually try to find ones above 75% cocoa because the higher the cocoa percentage, the better it is for you. However, sometimes I find that as the cocoa percentage goes up, the sugar in it does as well because it helps counteract some of the bitterness in the chocolate. So, I did as I always do and made homemade chocolates but with a twist and supercharged with goodness of course!
Simple. Clean. Ingredients. (makes 8)
1/4 cup cocoa powder
2 tablespoons coconut oil (melted)
3 tablespoons coconut sugar (more/less depending on your level of sweetness)
2 tablespoons quinoa
1/4 cup sliced almonds
Toast the quinoa in a frying pan or in the oven until lightly golden. Set aside.
Combine the coconut oil, coconut sugar, and cocoa powder in a double boiler or make your own by placing your ingredients in a bowl over a saucepan of boiling water. Stir everything together until incorporated. Make sure that no sugar granules remain in the mixture or it will turn out grainy. Fold in the toasted quinoa and sliced almonds then pour the mixture into molds.
Let them firm up in the fridge for 3 hours before removing them from the molds. Then, munch away!
*You might want to add more or less sugar to your homemade chocolates depending on your bitterness tolerance because these were good enough for mother deer and I who eat dark chocolate often but they were definitely not sweet enough for lil’ bun’s taste buds
YUM! I need to make these right now! I love dark chocolate, so the more bitter the better 🙂
not to mention the antioxidant packed aspect of it!
Yum! I need to make these right now! I love dark chocolate, so, bring on the bitter!
How creative to put quinoa in them! Love it!
I saw them in a chocolate bar at the store once and decided to recreate it myself! If you use quinoa puffs instead it’ll taste just like those crunch chocolate bars!
Ok thanks! I haven’t tried quinoa puffs yet…will have to do that!
This is very impressive. Thanks for sharing. Hope you have a lovely week! 🙂
Wow. (That’s my second wow today). These look so good. I think our family might fall in love with these.
Awh thanks!
I’ve now linked to this in a post with my favourite desserts from the week. I hope you like how I’ve done it. Please let me know if you want something changed.

I just saw that you mentioned to Lori that there are quinoa puffs? I need to look for them… I want to give this a try. I love how you made them into hearts. So sweet… It’s so nice to meet you…thank you so much for sharing this lovely candy with all of us!! Have a lovely day.. <3
I’ve been trying to look for them myself but rice puffs would be a good substitute too!
Wow!! Home made chocolate?? This I have to try for sure, and it will be a healthier version for sure.
Ok, so that’s another recipe on the must-make list! I would never have thought of putting quinoa in chocolate – hiding extra goodness in a chocolate treat – you can’t really lose!
hiding beets in chocolate cake is wonderful too! or zucchini banana bread!
