I’m not one to line up to buy something from a store or dine at a restaurant but Dominique Ansel Bakery was an exception I had to make. Brother deer recommended that we visit Dominique Ansel Bakery on our visit to New York because it was unlike any bakery he’s visited before!

We headed over to the Dominique Ansel Bakery location in the SOHO district on a weekday but there was still a line up out the door! The bakery entrance had an extended(?) door way but the line up was a few feet away from the entrance. Once it was your turn to head into the bakery, one of their workers lead your party in. As frustrating as it was to wait outside a bakery for over an hour smelling the goodness that awaited us inside, it had to be done.

When we finally got through the front door, we were amazed by all the pastries in front of us. First you’re greeted by all the puff pastries, then the cakes, macarons, and tarts. We then realize that we had to join another line to actually order at the counter which left us a bit defeated but we were almost there!

DKA

The DKA is one of the pastries that Dominique Ansel is known for. It’s essentially a caramelized croissant! In between each flaky layer of buttery pastry was sugar that caramelized to make this glorious creation! I’ve never had a croissant like this before. You could taste the quality of the ingredients and the richness of the butter with every bite. I loved peeling it to eat so I could see how many layers it had on the inside too. Such a delight.

Cookie shot

Why wouldn’t you want cookies and milk together in one? We really had to eat this one quick though because even though the cookie cup had chocolate on the inside to protect the cookie from giving in, the milk eventually got to it! If you like to enjoy your treats, I recommend you getting something else instead.

By now old bean had been waiting for us for a good hour or so at our meeting spot because what we thought would take us an hour ended up taking 2.5 hours since we had to wait outside the bakery for so long. It was only right for us to bring him back a treat so we decided to get the chocolate almond croissant for him.

The croissant wasn’t very chocolaty though even though it was advertised that way. The only chocolate was in the pastry so it wasn’t very sweet which was nice. The croissant unexpectedly had ground almonds (marzipan) stuffed on the inside though which packed lots of flavour. This croissant might not have been caramelized but it was just as flaky as the DKA!
