California sushi – Broadway

After a morning of shopping, Mother deer and I decided to go to California sushi for lunch. The Mount Pleasant location’s interior looks completely different than the Lougheed one in that it is much more modern and sleek. We got there at 2pm on a weekday and service was pretty quick.

Salmon avocado roll

It’s been a while since we’ve been to California sushi so it was nice to rediscover their menu. The two of us started off with a salmon avocado roll to share. Mother deer was impressed with the size of the roll and how they had a good amount of avocado in each piece.

Ishiyaki rice bowl

Next we decided to try the ishiyaki rice bowl which was beef, fish roe, shiitake mushroom, lettuce, wakame seaweed and pickled veggies served over a bed of rice in a stone pot. The stone pot was sizzling hot when it came to the table. I was surprised to see that the rice wasn’t seasoned with anything. At first I thought that it meant that the rice wouldn’t have a lot of flavour. However, I was wrong! It was packed full of flavour from the pickled veg and the shiitake mushrooms. We both thoroughly enjoyed this rice bowl and ended up finishing the whole thing.

BBQ squid

Our bbq squid came last even though it was the appetizer. The squid did not look grilled and had a rubbery texture. The squid tasted as though it was reheated in the microwave. It was not worth the $11 we paid for it. We were not impressed with this one.
