Ben Gong’s Tea

Hello tea-loving friends! Ben Gong’s tea has opened their second location in central Burnaby with their first spot in Richmond. I have never heard of the Ben Gong’s Tea bubble tea chain but they have locations in China and Australia too!

Although the store-front didn’t look too big, there was a big table to sit at on the inside of the cafe and a few small tables as well. I liked that they had a tree in there to show gratitude and fortune. It reminded me of both Asian and Japanese cultures. I haven’t seen something like this at a bubble tea shop before.

The drinks here are unique in that you can choose between milk teas, fruit teas, cheese teas and cheese smoothies! Their fruit teas usually have a green, black or herbal tea base with real fruit added to it for that extra Insta-worthy flare and freshness. Their drinks come in two sizes, Small (500mL) and Large (750mL).

Along the side of the bar, they put photos of their new featured drinks but they aren’t on the actual menu so it’s a bit confusing. If you’re a fan of trying out new drinks, I suggest you look at what their new items look like first!

From what I gathered, the specialty at Ben Gong’s tea are their tea cubes. The tea cubes are little blocks of cube flavoured jellies located at the bottom of their drinks. You can add your typical toppings like pearls, cream cheese tops, coconut jelly, and lemon to it too if you’re not a fan of their signature tea cubes.

Osmanthus cheese tea

On this fine day, Grayson decided to get an osmanthus cheese tea. The cream cheese top was smooth and silky. He really liked that there was a nice sprinkling of matcha powder on top to add aesthetic appeal. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a fan of the tea itself but he did enjoy the ratio of tea to topping. He also liked that the lid it came with had a flap so he could choose to use a straw for his drink or sip it to get a bit of the topping and the tea.

Green milk tea cube

Since it was their grand opening special, we got a mini green tea cube. It was lightly sweetened green milk tea with some of their tea jellies inside. Although I wasn’t able to choose the sweetness level of the drink, I did enjoy it because it wasn’t overly sweet. It was as though you added a bit of honey to your tea. I liked that they had a mini size too because sometimes you just want to try something new without having to commit to getting a full size.

On a different day, we came back and I got the oolong tea cube unsweetened and it was also quite delicious. Their teas are strong and the milk just adds creaminess without over powering the whole thing!
