Hello! A bit of a different post today since it’s something sweet instead of savory! We usually get our cakes from an Asian bakery or bake it ourselves but there was just no time for it this year. Instead, we decided to order a cake from Whole foods Burnaby. Whole foods Burnaby has a decent selection of cakes including coconut, carrot, strawberry chiffon, chocolate, and vegan mousse!

Tiramisu cake

We decided to go with the Tiramisu because they said that it was the least sweet out of all their offerings.

The cake had two layers. One layer was soaked with coffee and the other was plain cake. I find that the cakes from Whole Foods tend to be on the dense side. Perhaps it’s because I’m used to eating Asian sponge cakes so I feel this way.

Between the two layers was a mix of mascopone and cream cheese. The flavor of the filling was savory with a bit of tang from the cheese. The filling was light from being whipped and it helped cut through some of the denseness of the cake itself. The cake is then topped with a smaller layer of the filling and then dusted with espresso powder.

The cake was not heavy on the coffee flavor but not sweet enough to be kid friendly. Lil’ bun and I aren’t coffee fans and we still enjoyed the cake minus the dense texture. We also added berries to the edge of the cake because we felt that it looked too plain and fruitless otherwise. When you order the cake they offer to make a chocolate plaque with writing on it for you. We went with the obvious but you can get whatever you like on there. We chose to go with a dark chocolate base but you could easily ask them to do the white chocolate on the bottom instead!
