Top gun

I’ve heard so many things about the Top Gun group but I have never eaten at one of the Top Gun restaurants before so I was excited to dine here for our most recent family dinner. Well, I’m always excited for family dinners I mean, hellloooo 10 course meals but it’s especially awesome when it’s a place I’ve never been to before!

Top gun

Their interior of Top gun was quite spacious and I’m sure that they are usually super busy but since we were there on a week day at 6pm, the restaurant was quite empty.

Appetizer plate

My favorite part of the platter was the wood ear mushrooms because I just love them. Lil bun liked the deep fried tofu skin wrapped shiitake mushrooms the best. She said that the mushrooms were well seasoned and the wrap wasn’t oily. Brother deer’s favorite was the “jellyfish” and the baby octopus. He’s never seen red octopus before so he thought it was pretty cool.

Sauteed chicken, squid and veggies

Well sauteed dish of food, with the veggies still having a bite to them and the squid not tough. Not too salty or oily ether.

Deep fried lobster balls

These were new to us because we’ve never seen them prepared with a “breading” of slivered almonds before. Although the almonds made them crunchier, it was a little difficult to eat because it the almonds kept coming off.

Dried oysters, shiitake and bokchoy

I thought the sauce/roux for this dish was heavy on the salt but that’s probably because of the presence of the salted dried oysters. Would have appreciated a little more greens but pretty standard as far as this type of dish goes.

Lobster

I thought the lobster was a little over coated with flour before they deep-fried it because there was quite a bit of starchy dough on the lobster meat itself. Otherwise, the lobster was seasoned, fried and sauteed well.

Mushrooms with water spinach

Pretty standard, nothing really special about it. Just mushrooms and greens with a salty soy based roux sauce on top

Steamed fish

I forgot what type of fish this was but it was good fish. The flesh was flaky and had a “bite”/texture to it so it wasn’t mushy. Topped with ginger slices, cilantro and soy sauce.

Seafood fried rice in lotus leaf

The fried rice had egg, salted fish, and shrimp in it. The rice had a glutinous like texture because it was steamed in the lotus leaf and I liked how the flavor of the lotus leaf was apparent in the rice itself.

Egg vermicelli with mushroom and onion

The oyster vermicelli had a nice al dente bite to it and it’s texture reminded me to that of chow mien. There was a good amount of soy based sauce on it as well because it was just enough to coat all the noodles with a little bit of extra if you want more. I only wish there were more veggies!

There was also red bean soup for dessert. I thought it was quite watery and I wasn’t a big fan of it. It also took them a good 20 minutes after we paid our bill for them to bring it to us…which was a little unreasonable…
