Tap & Barrel – Convention Centre

And this post wraps up the 2019 Dineout Vancouver Festival for me. Originally Grayson and I were just going to go to Mulligan’s but we decided to go to the Tap & Barrel one as well because their menu sounded pretty tasty too.

Originally we were both going to each order a Dineout menu set at Tap & Barrel but we realized that we would just be ordering the same items so we opted to order one set and an entree off their dinner menu instead.

Truffle Celeriac Soup

To start we got the Truffle Celeriac Soup which was made up of pureed celeriac and cauliflower. Then it was topped with truffle oil. Now I’m not a fan of truffle oil but the flavour was mild enough for it to blend nicely into the soup. The soup was enjoyable on a chilly evening.

Poke bowl

The entree we decided to order off their regular menu as the Poke Bowl. It had ahi tuna, sushi rice, edamame, avocado, seaweed salad, green onion, pineapple, pickled ginger, carrot and sesame seeds. Everything was topped with a drizzle of sweet mango sauce and wasabi mayo. Everything mixed together nicely and we liked the toppings to rice ratio. It could have been a larger portion but other than that no complaints!

Miso Soy Steelhead

For the Dineout entree, we chose the Miso Soy Steelhead. It was marinated liberally and packed full of sweet miso flavor. Grayson was addicted to it and was right to feel that way because the fish was also super flaky. We got to choose the sides it came with and decided to go with the truffle macaroni and cheese and the fried brussels sprouts.

At first we weren’t going to choose the truffle mac and cheese because we thought it would be heavy and too cheesy for us but it wasn’t like that at all. Even though it didn’t have much truffle flavor, it was enjoyable because it was lightly coated in a creamy sauce. The brussels sprouts were interesting because they tasted a little bit Asian? I’m not sure if it was because of the type of oil it was fried in because it wasn’t seasoned with anything. Anyway, they were delicious nevertheless so who cares!

Salted Caramel Apple Buckle

This Salted Caramel Apple Buckle rounded off our meal nicely. It’s texture was similar to a bread pudding with chunks of baked apple in between the layers. On top of the buckle was a delicious scoop salted caramel gelato from Mario’s. As far as salted caramel gelatos go, this was definitely not too sweet on it’s own. Although if you eat the two together, it can get a little sweet in my opinion so if you’re going to have it, I recommend eating the two separately!
