Sushimoto Japanese restaurant

We were debating where to go for lil’ bun’s birthday dinner and we ended up going to Sushimoto Japanese restaurant because both mother deer and I have heard great things about it from our friends. I’m surprised that it wasn’t busier when we walked in because it was a Friday night and it was at such a prime location being that it’s just outside Holdom skytrain station.

The decor, menu and cups at Sushimoto Japanese restaurant was colourful and pretty to look at!

Assorted sashimi

The daily assorted sashimi ($9.90) came with two of salmon, tuna, tai and hokkagai sashimi. I’ve never seen this before but Sushimoto offered a bowl of rice to come with your sashimi upon request! Of course we asked for it because, who doesn’t want free rice? We loved the rice because it was super well seasoned and we ended up making our own (not so pretty) nigiris with it (:

Star roll

Star roll ($6.50) mango cucumber roll topped with vegetable tempura and mango sauce. Brother deer was the one who chose this vegetarian friendly roll which came to a surprise to me because normally he avoids “rabbit food” like the plague. This roll ended up being a hit at our table because it was absolutely delish! The mango was super sweet and the crispy veggie tempura on top set off the softness of the interior of the roll

French roll

French roll ($9.00) california roll topped with ebi, wasabi tobiko and wasabi mayo. I wasn’t sure how I felt about this one because it was basically a california with a little something extra on top but I’ve never had wasabi tobiko before so I guess that was a nice touch. Even lil’ bun who won’t touch wasabi didn’t mind them all too much because the flavor was mild enough to not be considered “spicy

Moto signature roll

Moto signature roll ($9.00) house roll wrapped with soy paper wrap and topped with green onion and unagi sauce. This was essentially a house roll with a soy paper wrap around it instead of seaweed. I thought this roll was pretty yum as far as house rolls go. It wasn’t as messy as most house rolls since it wasn’t made “inside out” style. However, old bean didn’t seem to fancy it all too much because he doesn’t like super warm sushi rice and found it to be almost off putting because of it.

Dynamite roll

The dynamite roll ($4.70) these rolls were pretty standard…so nothing special but the chopped scallop roll ($3.90) was just not impressive at all. As you can see, the rolls were quite loosely wrapped and we were definitely not a fan of it because of this.

Salmon + tuna sashimi

The sashimi was very fresh and glistened under the light. It might not sound like much to eat, but I decided to get it with a bowl of rice on the side. So it ended up being being perfectly enough for me to have.

Spicy california roll

Nothing special here, just a standard california roll with a pebble of siracha sauce on top. We expected there to be a little more than just 6 pieces of sushi in the roll

Seared saba sashimi

Typically, Grayson goes for raw saba but he was feeling adventurous so he decided to go with the seared version. Like me, he chose to get this with a bowl of rice on the side. He liked assembling his own pieces of nigiris with the sushi rice. The saba was prepared well and despite being seared, it wasn’t over cooked.
