Sushi UOmo

Sushi Uomo is located in Burnaby Heights and is a Korean owned Japanese restaurant. Sushi Uomo offers a variety of Japanese fare at reasonable prices. I’ve been here a few times in the past before but this time we wanted to try a few new dishes and rolls.

Wakame salad

To start I decided to get the wakame salad ($3.75) because it’s my absolute favorite appetizer to have. The type of wakame seaweed they used in the salad was a little different than the kind I’m used to because there were different varieties of seaweed in the mix. I didn’t mind it though because it was a nice change to the usual and the presentation of the dish was a breath of fresh air as well because I’m not used to seeing such pretty plating at neighbourhood joints.

Tuna sashimi

We got the tuna sashimi to share. The presentation of the tuna was lovely but I wish I could say the same about the taste of it. I’m not a sashimi expert or anything but I had a hunch that the fish was frozen because it was waaayy too cold and firm to taste. I think I even got a piece that was half thawed because it took a bit of effort to get through (in comparison to the soft tuna sashimi texture I’m used to).

Negitoro roll

I’ve mentioned this before in the past but Grayson has a new obsession with negitoro roll ($2.75) so he had to get it here. Instead of being cut vertically, the rolls were cut on a diagonal for presentation sake. Grayson appreciated this attention to plating but was not a fan of how long it took for it to come to the table.

Nigiri combo

This came with eight nigiris selected by the chef. This nigiri combo had ika, ebi, saba, hokkagai, salmon (sake), tuna, red snapper, and tai. Grayson’s favourite was the saba. He liked that there were a few slivers of ginger on top to help cut some of the oiliness have it and it was also something he had never seen before. The pieces of rice in the nigiri were quite small but it was no matter because the large pieces of seafood that covered is the part that counts.

Salmon sashimi

As always, super thick slices that would make you think that there’s 2 slices in one!

Vegetable roll and alaska roll

Am I the only one who thinks that the random “UO” written in ranch dressing(?) was weird? The rolls were pretty good. I thought the vegetable roll could have had something more to it than daikon radish shreds to add flavour. The Alaska rolls were filled with lots of ingredients so yay!

BC roll and lady mango roll

The lady mango roll here is one of the more popular rolls here. They serve it topped with mango to add sweetness! If you are a fan of mangos try it out! We decided to try the BC roll as well since we never order it. It was alright and didn’t stand out next to the lady mango roll.

Seafood salad

This was my first time ordering this and goodness look how GLORIOUS it looks. Look at that pile of sashimi there is on top! In case you couldn’t tell what was under there here’s what was hiding under the daikon and tobiko.

For a low $8.50 I got a big bowl of salad greens with a good 3 slices of tuna, 2 slices of wild salmon, 5 slices of atlantic salmon, 3 sweet shrimps, 3 slices of tai, 3 pieces of tako, and 2 pieces of hokkagai!

This was seriously more worth it than ordering sashimi on it’s own!

We’d probably come to Sushi UO again because we appreciated the presentation and quality of most of the food we ate. But I think we’re probably going to opt to stay away from the spicy sashimi next time just because we suspect that it was frozen.
