Sushi Koo

Hello foodie friends! Grayson and I never go out for lunch together because it just doesn’t work out that way most of the time but last week we had the opportunity to do so in Coquitlam. Typically we go to our usual crossbridge noodle spot but we wanted to try out somewhere new instead. And there it was…Sushi Koo!

Sushi Koo labels itself as a “fine Japanese restaurant” which can be interpreted as fine-dining but it is nothing of the sort. Their prices are moderate, their decor is homey and their menu is extensive offering a variety of items including nigiri served aburi style. We chose to order off the lunch box menu.

Both of our orders came with a bowl of miso soup. Nothing too special but there were a few pieces of firm tofu on the inside.

Sushi Koo Nigiris

Grayson thought that his bento box wouldn’t be enough. So, he also ordered a saba aburi nigiri and a tamago nigiri. Both were made well. The saba came with its usual grated ginger garnish which helped cut some of the fattiness of the fish.

Lunch Bento A

The lunch bento A came with California rolls, tempura, salad, and chicken teriyaki. The chicken teriyaki sauce was lightly sweetened and they put just enough on top of it for it to lightly coat everything. The california rolls did not go light on the imitation crab and the rice was well seasoned as well. Grayson liked that the tempura came with a variety of things including squash, yam and shrimp. They were all crispy and held up to being in the dipping sauce. If you’re a tempura lover you’d know about the dreaded situation that can happen when the coating falls off mid dip…

Spicy Salmon combo

I was really feeling sushi so I decided to get the spicy salmon combo which came with a spicy salmon roll, negitoro roll, and 3 nigiris. All of which were a delight! The spicy sauce on top wasn’t too sweet like it is at most places which leaves you confused as to whether it is supposed to be a spicy roll or not. My complaint would be about the negitoro because it was luke-warm and it smelled pretty fishy…I’m not sure if it was how it was supposed to be like but I didn’t end up finishing them because I wasn’t sure it was food safe.

Quick bites:

  1. Cheap eats
  2. Good quality food with exception of negitoro roll
  3. Nice cozy ambiance
