Sushi Giwa has expanded it’s culinary horizons to the Heights! It’s original location is located further up Hastings street by Capitol hill.
The interior of Sushi Giwa had the signature faux cherry blossom trees that were located at the original location. They also divide the restaurant up differently than the previous restaurant that existed here (Yo sushi) in a way that yielded more seating and private dining space.
Crazy boy roll
Deep fried california roll with mild sauce
The exterior of the roll wasn’t very crispy or crunchy even though it was deep fried. It was actually rather chewy and the rice resembled that of which you would find on the side of Korean bibimbap where the rice gets “crispy”
Chopped scallop roll
Not much scallop inside and roll wasn’t rolled very tightly either so it fell apart easily. Lil’ bun said that the chopped scallop roll was too heavy on the mayo and it also had an odd shade of orange.
Giant dynamite roll
Even though the roll was titled “giant” they weren’t actually all that giant. It just felt like a normal dynamite roll with 2 extra pieces…? Since normally it comes with 6 pieces here.
Sashimi sushi combo
Fish didnt’ taste like fish? It didn’t really taste like anything but normally you’d be able to taste they omega-3/oiliness of the fish when you eat it. I don’t really know what kind of sashimi I was eating but at least they were thick cut?
Ebi roll
What kind of “ebi” (shrimp) roll was this? Do you see any shrimp in here? Because I sure don’t! Oh wait what’s that in the corner squished off to the side of the roll? Oh it’s a measly piece of shrimp! Seriously! This was more of a GIANT tamago (sweet egg) roll than a shrimp roll! Don’t get this! It’s so deceiving! They should just call it a tamago roll with a side of shrimp.
Beef “teriyaki”
We never tried any of the Korean dishes here before so we decided to give it a go…which ended up being a BAD decision because the portion was so small and there was a medium ice cream scoop of rice on there…not even a whole bowl! So disappointing! The beef was also shredded super finely. Umm…we ordered was beef bulgolgi NOT beef teriyaki!
Sushi combo
I guess technically you can call this “big value” because they gave you a huge piece of rice for each nigiri but seafood wasn’t too exceptionally fresh and as with all their sushi…soggy chewy seaweed…yet again.
Holdom roll
shrimp tempura, cream cheese, cucumber, avocado roll topped with imitation crab and unagi sauce
NOT WORTH IT. The sushi roll it self was TINY (about the same size as a maki give or take a little) and they bulked it up with the cheap pverly mayo-ed imitation crab on top.
And as you can see, the rolls were made up of half rice half filling…so all you could really taste was rice….and as with the “ebi” roll, WHERE’S THE SHRIMP?!
Half order salmon sashimi
Not exceptionally good quality but you get what you pay for. The slices here were also smaller than the capital hill location
Sashimi and sushi combo
The sashimi wasn’t very fresh and the quality is what you pay for. The rice in the nigiri sushi wasn’t seasoned very well and was quite sticky in texture. The seaweed that was wrapped around the chopped scallop and massago nigris was a little on the soggy side too.
Beef yakisoba
Brother deer and lil’ bun said that they really liked this dish. They actually ended up finishing a majority of it before anyone else could have any. It was flavored and seasoned well and from what I could tell, the beef wasn’t over done and the noodles were tender. This was the first time the two of them ever tried yakisoba and they prefer it over yakiudon which is a good thing because it would cost $1 more to have this dish in udon version!
