Shibuyatei

Grayson wasn’t feeling well and just wanted some homecooked Japanese food for dinner. We usually head off to hi genki for this but we were in Richmond that day. We came across Shibuyatei after a few minutes of searching around and decided to stop by.

To be honest, the two of us weren’t sure if we wanted to step through the door when we first arrived at Shibuyatei. It was dimly lit, unfortunate news was playing on the tv and it was empty. But we already went all the way there so we decided to give it a shot.

Giff-don

Grayson decided to get the Giff-don which was a deep fried chicken bowl. It wasn’t fried and batter like kaarage though. Rather it was boneless chicken thighs deep fried to have them cooked through. It also came with a dollop of mustard on top which added a nice tang apparently. It resembled teriyaki but Grayson said that the sauce was completely different and more on the savory than sweet side.

Ramen

Unfortunately they no longer serve sushi so I reluctantly opted for a ramen instead. The broth was too salty for my liking so I had to pour some of my tea in it to “water it down.” However, I liked that it didn’t have any artificial flavors in it and most of the flavor came from the soy broth and the bamboo shoots. The piece of chashu looked melt-in-your-mouth tender and the ramen noodles were perfectly chewy!
