Hi Genki, an oldie but a goodie! No pun intended…I know it’s located in a senior home…! After my eye check-up, Mother deer asked where we should go for lunch and I suggested Hi Genki because she’s been wanting to try it for a while.
Hi Genki don don don combo
Since she had never been here before, I decided to order the don don don combo so she could try a bit of everything they serve here. It came with mini servings of potato croquette curry, chicken teriyaki and kitsune udon.
Croquette curry
The bowl of rice was topped with a sweet and savory curry sauce. The curry sauce here is one of my favorites out there because they put so many carrots and potatoes inside! When I order Japanese curry I want it to actually have substance and not just sauce. The potato croquette was fried so it was crispy on the outside but filled with mashed potato on the inside. If you haven’t had this before, you’re missing out. It’s a hash brown on a whole other level.
Chicken teriyaki
They use chicken thigh meat for their chicken teriyaki so the meat remained moist and tender. The chicken was marinated and lightly coated in sweet teriyaki sauce so it wasn’t too overwhelming with flavor. It wasn’t anything spectacular but it was pretty tasty.
Kitsune udon
The kitsune udon was pretty much plain udon with a slice of fish cake in dashi broth. The udon was softer than I typically like. Nothing special here.
Tonkatsu don
Last but not least we got the tonkatsu don. The breading on the pork was light so it remained crispy on the outside for the most part. However the pieces that touched the rice and egg became soggy in texture which wasn’t very pleasant. While there was a good portion of protein on top, we wish that there was more of a sauce on this dish because the rice became dry to eat really quickly.
