After travelling in London and Portugal for almost a week, Old Bean started to crave Asian food. So, he suggested that we go for dinner while we were in London’s Chinatown. After looking around at our options, we finally settled on going to Shanghai Modern. The restaurant was very large on the inside with two floors of seating for patrons. Needless to say, we were seated quickly despite the fact it was dinner time.
Xiao long bao
It came with 8 little pillows of joy and a ginger dipping sauce. Even though they looked perfect on the outside, they were not very flavorful and the wrapper on the outside was too thick. We only ended up finishing them because we were feeling hungry but otherwise we probably wouldn’t have.
Beef noodle soup
I’ve had my share of Taiwanese beef noodle soup and it never looked as oily as the one at this restaurant so I wasn’t sure why it was presented that way. With that being said, it did have a lot of meat in it which made up for the fact that the broth was mediocre.
Wonton noodle soup
This was the best out of the three things we ordered. Each wonton was stuffed with meat and wonton! They were all super large and with the noodles it came with, this bowl of noodle soup ended up being very filling! The broth didn’t really have any flavor in it though.
All in all, we weren’t too impressed by Shanghai Modern and wouldn’t come back for another visit.
