Hi friends! During our trip to Portugal, Old bean said we had to go to Ramiro’s seafood restaurant because he heard wonderful things about their seafood. That and even though we had been in Portugal for a few days, we had yet to have a seafood meal! So off to Ramiro seafood restaurant we went!

We arrived at Ramiro seafood restaurant a little before it opened so we didn’t have to wait to be seated. Once we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by huge display cases of crustaceans! It was seafood galore!

Our server brought us our menu which was displayed on an ipad after he showed us to our table. We thought this was interesting but it did have translations of the menu on their so we would know what we were ordering. The servers here knew some English which helped with communication as well.

After we ordered, we investigated some of the tools that laid in front of us. We had a fork, butter knife, lobster pick and a hammer! I’ve never eaten shellfish with a hammer before so I was excited to try it out!

Toasted bread and butter

While we were waiting for our food, our server also brought us a plate of toasted bread with butter. We didn’t order it but in Portugal they often put appetizers at your table and if you eat it they charge you so if you don’t want to pay for it don’t eat it! Old bean was really hungry though so he ended up eating a few slices.

Crab

Our meal started off with a crab! The crab was served cold which was surprising and it was presented with the innards in the shell. I’m not a fan of innards but Old bean was surprised that there was a lot of it since crabs in Vancouver have much less. Old bean spread it on a piece of the butter toast and said it was delicious.

At this point I was busy entertaining myself by using the plastic hammer to get the shell out of the claw and legs of the crab. As much as the hammer was helpful in breaking the shell apart. You had to be careful because if you hit it too hard, the shells end up being too small and it ends up getting in the crab meat! The crab was very fresh and tender. I liked that they didn’t do anything to it besides cook it because it allowed the flavor of the crab to shine through.

Garlic shrimp

Next came the garlic shrimp. This was very underwhelming. The shrimp was over-cooked and almost mealy. It was pretty disappointing to see this at a seafood restaurant.

Razor clams

The razor clams that came after the shrimp helped give the restaurant some more points though because they were delicious! The clams were cooked to perfection and had the taste of the sea mixed with garlic butter. Normally something like this would be too buttery for me but I went back for more! Mother deer agreed and said this was her favourite dish of the day.
