Quiznos Sub – New Westminister

quiznos lamb gyro sandwich

Hello sandwich loving friends! Quiznos Sub is back with their Gyros except this time, it comes with both lamb and beef slices! Last year, they only offered this with beef and in wrap/sandwich form but this year, they have it in sub and sammie form.

Do you pronounce “gyro” as “yeer-oh,” “jai-ro,” “gee-ro” or “hee-ro?” That’s a question Quiznos Sub asked Canadian fans and the final verdict is at a dominating 48%, “jai-ro” was shown to be how most Canadians pronounce the word “gyro.”

Enough with the fun facts though because what you’re really here to read about is the food right? As I mentioned, this year the gyro offerings were a little bit different. Instead of only having tzatziki sauce, tomato, lettuce and beef slices, they added red onions, feta cheese, and banana peppers.

They also had an option of having it as a Sammie or a Sub sandwich. So what exactly is a Sammie?

A Sammie is a mix between a flatbread and a pita. The flatbread is pillowy soft but cut into a circle shape similarly to pita bread. The filling is then wrapped inside it so it looks a little bit like a taco.

The interesting about the meat that they use for the gyro is that it is seasoned and slow-roasted for not one, not two but FIVE hours on a traditional open Greek rotisserie before being carved into slices.

Unfortunately there wasn’t any more flatbread sammies available at the location we were at but we were equally delighted to opt for the Sub sandwiches. The beef and lamb slices were heavily seasoned and nicely under the warming oven. The lettuce and onions added crispiness while the tzatziki sauce added tang. The banana peppers were left on the side before being wrapped together because we didn’t want them to over-power the whole sandwich before we really tried it.

Overall, we enjoyed the sandwiches and the addition of the lamb was a welcomed surprise. We can’t wait to try the Sammies!
