Onigilly

Hello hello! More posts from my travels continue as I visit Onigilly in Palo Alto, San Fran! Onigilly is an onigiri (Japanese rice ball) bar that serves them in a variety of flavors! Each of them are made to order and you get to watch them put them into molds to make sure that they are each perfectly triangular.

Onigilly offers both vegetarian and meat versions of their rice balls so anyone can come in and enjoy them no matter their dietary requirement. They offer their onigiris alone, in sets with add-on sides or as a bowl if you’re feeling extra hungry.

Teriyaki chicken

I decided to get the renkon (spicy sauteed lotus root with sesame) and teriyaki chicken onigiris. They looked pretty similar in terms of how the filling looked but tasted completely different. I liked that there was an even portion of filling in each onigiri so it wasn’t dominated with rice but I wasn’t a huge fan of how they were wrapped because it wasn’t done in the traditional Japanese rice ball way. Instead it was more like two triangular shaped rice patties with something sandwiched in between.

Both onigiris were packed full of flavor and the lotus root onigiri was spicier than I thought! It had real chili peppers in and had a kick to it. The teriyaki chicken had a sweeter profile in comparison and had lots of juicy pieces of chicken thigh in it. I’d definitely come again some time!
