Nao sushi Japanese restaurant

I still remember how when Nao sushi first opened, it was the go to Japanese place in Burnaby. It was also one of the first Japanese owned restaurants in the area. I hadn’t been back to Nao sushi a few years but Grayson and I decided to give it a revisit a not too long ago.

Vegetable Kamemeshi

I decided to get the vegetable kamemeshi because it’s one of those dishes that you can’t get anywhere else. Or at least I haven’t seen it at any other restaurant. It reminds me of a Japanese version of Korean bibimbap because it’s steamed rice flavored with dashi and soy topped with veggies and proteins.

I like the veggie one the best because I just love Japanese vegetables especially the pickles. They also have a chicken one and a seafood one which I’ve heard are amazing. If you go at lunch time, they have a special offer where you can get a kamemeshi with assorted toppings. This is the perfect dish for a cold day 🙂 Although I must warn you that it’s a 20 minute wait for it so don’t order it if you’re super hungry!

Lunch bento box

Grayson was going to get the kamemeshi too but his desire for saba was going on strong so he decided to get a lunch bento box instead. It came with a bit of everything including seared miso saba, kaarage, gomae (sesame spinach salad) and assorted nigiri. He said everything was cooked to perfection and apparently it’s hard to do this because he usually finds his saba to be cooked too dry. He said the miso added a light earthiness to it without making it overly salty. The seafood on the nigiri was super fresh too but his favorite was the homemade tamago 🙂
