Nanaimo sushi revisit

It was mother deer’s birthday a while ago and we decided to head on over to Nanaimo sushi for dinner to celebrate it. The Nanaimo sushi is pretty standard, nothing we’re over the moon about but it’s good cheap eats!

Kids combo

Lil bun hadn’t had tamago roll in a while so we decided that we get the kids combo ($5.95) for her which came with a cucumber maki, tamago maki and half a california roll. These rolls could have been rolled tighter. They were falling apart!

Chopped scallop roll

Next, we decided to get a chopped scallop roll ($3.75) because lil’ bun loves her chopped scallop. Huh, funny how this was supposed to be for mother deer’s birthday but so far all we’ve ordered is what lil’ bun likes to eat…in hindsight that probably wasn’t the most considerate of things to do. Anyways, as you can see, the rolls were packed full of scallop with very little cucumber which is always a plus because scallops > cucumbers any day!

Love boat

Last but not least, we decided to get the love boat ($24.95). Yes, we weren’t really on a date but we’ve never ordered this before and we were already planning on ordering assorted sashimi which would of cost $14.95, so we figured that it would be a better deal to just go for it and get the whole boat instead since for an extra $10, you get to have 8 nigiris, half a california roll, half a tuna maki, half a salmon maki, oranges and 2 bowls of miso soup.

The sashimi wasn’t the freshest I’ve had and they’ve definitely skimped on the size of their sashimi since the last time I’ve been here but we were all pretty satisfied with the meal we had.

Nanaimo sushi Takeout

We decided to order somethings to take home to Old bean and Brother deer as well.

Sushi pizza

The menu failed to mention that there was salmon and spicy sauce on it so both brother deer and lil’ bun couldn’t have any of it. For those who are like me and don’t know what the sushi pizza is, it’s chopped salmon, avocado, and massago on a deep fried sushi rice base with spicy aioli on top. I thought the pizza was alright I wouldn’t order it again because I like my salmon cold but it was a pretty nifty dish. Old bean enjoyed it quite a bit and devoured half of it!

Assorted sashimi

We also ordered the assorted sashimi ($14.95), Old bean usually likes sashimi. Although brother deer isn’t a fish fanatic, he does enjoy his prawns, hokkagai and tako. Old Bean liked it and thought everything tasted decently fresh.

King chicken katsu

Of course we had to order an entree rice type dish for old bean and brother deer since they are big eaters afterall. I decided to order the king chicken katsu ($7.50) for them because they’ve never tried it before and I thought the name made it sound impressive. Oh gosh there was a lot of katsu in that box! It came with rice and salad as well. The katsu was fried absolutely well because it was incredibly crispy.

Maki tray A

For our last item we chose to get maki tray A ($17.95) which came with dynamite roll, chopped scallop roll, alaska roll, BC roll, salmon maki and tuna maki. The rolls were pretty standard so no surprises here.
