Nam Dae Moon Burnaby

Nam Dae Moon black bean glutinous rice cake

Nam Dae Moon has opened a new location in Burnaby near Royal Oak skytrain station. Nam Dae Moon Burnaby specializes in steamed Korean rice cakes and glutinous rice cakes. They also have large mochi (daifuku) with unique fillings to choose from. Unlike the location in Richmond, this one offers a cafe experience with a gorgeous interior perfect for all your photography needs.

Their menu is short but sweet with a good handful of items from each category to choose form. More recently they came out with mochi cake waffles which we decided to try out on this visit. Each of their rice cakes are made fresh daily and are such a treat!

Red bean glutinous rice cake

This is one of their number one items and I can tell because they are sooo tasty! Each piece is super soft and chewy! I love how the inside has a sweeter “jammy” filling that adds more flavour to the plain rice cakes. The red bean is mashed and just stuck on the outside which means that it falls off easily so be careful when you’re eating it. I love how well it pairs with tea!

Black bean glutinous rice cake

This one was similar to the red bean one but I preferred this one because the black beans actually stayed put! Each bite was just as chewy as the red bean one but this one had more filling for some reason. I didn’t end up finishing both packs of glutinous rice cakes so I just stored them in the fridge. They next day, I just heated the pieces up in the microwave for 15 seconds and they were almost just as tasty as they were fresh!

Chestnut mochi taco cake

I was REALLY wanting to love this but it fell flat for me. Not only was it $13 for 4 of them but each one was just filled with whipped cream! The mochi was barely there and all I could taste was the chestnut whipped cream. Granted the whipped cream was delicious but I expected more. The chestnut on top was also tough and would have been better if it was cut up or something to make it an easier bite.

I love the glutinous rice cakes that I get at Nam Dae Moon! However the steamed rice cakes and mochi tacos are a miss for me. While the steamed rice cakes are a popular choice, reheating them is a hassle as you have to resteam and the flavour is quite mild. So, I’d come for the glutinous rice cakes but it’s a pass on everything else.
