These Matcha chocolate chip cookies have 2 of my favourite things in the world. Matcha and Chocolate. They’re chewy, crunchy, and lightly sweetened which means that they’re perfect to go with any mid-day pick me up.

Am I the only one who missed out on National Chocolate Chip day last week? I just found that out yesterday and I had to make up for lost time by making these little nuggets of joy. I’m not a huge sweet tooth but when it comes to all things tea flavoured, especially matcha, I’m all in.

Matcha loaf? Yes. Matcha cake? Sign me up! Matcha waffles? Amazing! Matcha brownies? Absolutely!

And cookies? Cookies are my all time weakness and with the addition of matcha? Pure kryptonite. I’m telling you, it was bad. Capital “B” bad. I practically gobbled all these up right out of the oven because not only were they bite sized and super cute but they had so much matcha flavour!

Baking with matcha

People ask me why they don’t taste the matcha in their baked goods and the simple answer is, it’s because the appropriate grade of matcha is not being used. There are a few grades of matcha, but the main ones are ceremonial grade and culinary grade.

Ceremonial grade matcha has a lighter flavour because it is typically used for consuming on it’s own or in a latte. Culinary grade matcha has a deeper, almost bitter flavour and is used for cooking because of its stronger flavour profile.

This isn’t to say that you can’t use ceremonial grade matcha to bake or cook, but you will probably need to use much more of it if you are going to use it.

So why am I so obsessed with matcha? Well, not only do I like the flavour of it but it’s also said to be great for stress relief, mental alertness, heart health and full of antioxidants.

There are lots of different flavour profiles for them as well and Davids Tea has perfect ones for beginners because they infuse them with fun flavours like blueberry, yuzu, maple and more!
