I probably shouldn’t be sharing this with the world but I can’t help myself because this secret is too good to keep to myself! Key Party is one of the newest speakeasys in town and it’s located right beside the Rumpus room. This hidden bar might look like an all business accountant office on the outside but there’s nothing but leisure on the inside.
After a good 30 min wait outside Key Party, we finally got into the bar and were greeted by a decorative dish of keys as an homage to the key parties that were ever so popular in the 70’s.
Even though we were pretty full from our visit to True Nosh Kitchen right before, we were happy to be greeted with a small bowl of snack mix when we were seated. There’s something about waiting for 30 minutes that gets you hungry you know?
The bowl was filled with pretzel sticks, candied pecans, salted peanuts, corn chips and more. I did appreciate the server asking if we had peanut allergies before putting it down. You just never know who might have an allergy and eat something accidentally you know? So A+ for safety precautions.
Key party menu
Their menu had three sides to it. One with cocktails, one with beers/wines and the last with a list of snacks. The cocktails here are at a fair price ranging from $11-13 for a 2oz/3oz drink. They offer a handful of wines and beers to choose with a variety of popular selections and craft ones as well. While they do have snacks on their menu, they are on the pricey side for what they are so I would recommend having a bite before coming by or you could always eat at the Rumpus Room located next door.
I came here coming wanting to try something new so I ordered the melon ball cocktail. Grayson went with a vodka cran to be on the safe side. The two of us also got a jello shot each for spontaneity sake.
Melon ball
The melon ball came with a welcome skewer of cantaloupe and honey dew on top. I liked this touch because it added sweetness to the slightly bitter tasting cocktail. With absolut citron and melon liqueur, I thought that the drink would be on the sweet side. That’s why I was surprised when it tasted strongly of alcohol. I guess I should have expected it from a 2oz drink! Overall I enjoyed the drink and would come again!
Jello shots
What surprised us were the jello shots that had a mix of champagne, vodka and cassis. We’ve had our share of jello shots and they’re usually sweet tasting. But, you could really taste the alcohol in the ones here. The champagne added a depth of flavor and the cassis added a unique level of sweetness. The whipped cream and sprinkles on top didn’t add to the flavor but it was a fun and playful touch.
As another reference to key parties, the evening ended off with our bill given to us along with a bowl of sour keys. Needless to say, this was a sweet way to end off our evening.
