Jin Jang

Jin Jiang preserved cabbage pork noodles

Jin Jang is located along Kingsway hidden inside the parking lot of Best Western Hotel. Jin Jang offers Shanghainese cuisine at fare prices.

In all my years of living in Vancouver, I have yet to eat at a Shanghainese restaurant here. Crazy? A little. Apparently Mother deer and lil’ bun always go for it though on their little lunch dates. Being the curious foodie that I am, I decided to go with them one day to see what I was missing out on.

Steamed Shanghai dumplings

I wasn’t expecting much going into these since I’ve had a million xiao long baos when I was in Taiwan a few months ago but they were pretty good. There was a good amount of hot soup on the inside and there was a generous amount of pork on the inside too.

Pan fried pork bun

These buns are similar to steamed buns but instead of being steamed they are seared on a pan with hot oil and then water is added to steam them. I thought the wrapping was quite thick in comparison to the amount of filling there was on the inside but the flavor of the pork was still apparent despite this. We thought that this dish was really worth the value since the buns were quite large and were only $1 bun.

Sliced fish and preserved vegetable in soup

Mother deer said that the type of noodles that they use in this noodle soup is similar to Japanese soumen but this is just the Shanghai version of it.

The fish was silky soft and the noodles were cooked al dente with some bite to them still. It wasn’t a memorable bowl of noodles but it wasn’t too bad either.
