Horizons

Admittedly, I’m not a fine dining type of gal but it was Grayson and I’s anniversary last week and we ended up going to Horizons for dinner. Horizons is a formal restaurant located by Burnaby Mountain. Horizons offers fine-dining west coast cuisine.

At first, we were seated at a table where Grayson was sitting to the side of me instead of in front of me. He didn’t like this type of seating because he felt that it was a little awkward. So he asked our server if we could move tables. Our new spot was much more roomy because it was a 4 person table.

Albacore Tuna tataki

This dish came with 3 slices of togarashi rubbed seared tuna, tomato slices, avocado, and a frisee salad. The tuna was beautifully seasoned and seared. You could taste the hint of spice from the chili pepper rub. The light tangy salad vinaigrette helped balance everything out. I really enjoyed the vinaigrette they had on the frisee and I haven’t encountered anything like it before. I think that it may have been a mixture of soy sauce, rice vinegar, mirin and a citrus of sorts.

Wild BC salmon

I love my fish and was really excited about this one. Originally it was supposed to come with a parmesan risotto but I requested extra vegetables instead. I also asked for the lemon emulsion on the side because I wanted to be able to taste the salmon both alone and with the sauce.

The salmon arrived at the table grilled to perfection; the flesh was moist and flaked off itself beautifully. The smokiness from the alderwood barbecue it was grilled on came through in flavour. I was glad that I asked for the sauce on the side at this point because I don’t think I would have noticed such a deliciously subtle aspect of the fish otherwise.

Pork tenderloin

Grayson decided that he would try something new so he went with this dish. The apple brined pork came with an apple pear compote topping as well as a side of mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables.

Grayson had never encountered the combination of pork and apple before but was happy to have found such a magnificent pairing. The sweetness of the apple complimented the slight heat that came from the chili rub. The demi glaze just tied everything together.

Blueberry bread pudding

Typically, I’m not a fan of bread pudding but Grayson wanted to order it so we did. To my surprise this bread pudding was actually not as sweet as I expected. I don’t have a sweet tooth and this was definitely the perfect amount of sweetness for me. The blueberry came through really well and the blueberry coulis on the side just helped amp up the flavour even more. I never knew that he loved bread pudding but I guess, you never stop learning things about the other person even after knowing each other for so long.

Lemon possat

The lemon possat was extremely creamy and had the perfect amount of tartness to it. Blueberry and lemon has always been a favorite combination of mine and eating the two together just took the dessert over the top. Except, those two aspects weren’t even my favorite parts of the dessert, my favorite has got to be the gingersnap cookie! I love my ginger cookies and it was such a treat to have!
