After spending a lovely day walking along the beach, we decided to head on over to Hi-Nippon for dinner because it’s huge bright sign caught our eye as we drove by. The interior of Hi Nippon was decorated with woodsy Japanese style wall panes and they even had seating with tatami mats!
Hi Nippon interior
I couldn’t spend too much time on admiring the interior decor though because Grayson was hungry and was asking me if I knew what I wanted every 30 seconds. Well to be fair I usually decide in no time but the menu here was so extensive that it took me a good 5 minutes to just skim through it all!
But…I eventually got myself through it all and we decided to order a few things to share.
Seafood soba
The soup was nothing special and just tasted like a basic soy based kombu style broth. Grayson enjoyed it though and ended up drinking a couple bowls of it though. I found the soba noodles a tad over cooked because they were too soft for me but Grayson thought that they were perfect.
The bowl contained shrimp, squid, cabbage, baby scallops, imitation crab stick, broccoli, and mushrooms. I think that there was a pretty generous portion of veggies, seafood and noodles in there. However, I must note that since all the seafood was frozen before they added it into the broth. Which left a lot of it was still stuck together. It doesn’t take long to separate seafood so we felt like there was a lack of effort on their part.
Tuna bbq roll
It didn’t really taste like barbeque and we were disappointed to find that it resembled a BC roll. One note about the sushi is that the sushi rice wasn’t very good. It was really wet, mushy and sticky making the rolls a little unappealing.
Salmon avocado roll
We liked that there was wild salmon in this roll but as you can see below, a majority of the rolls had more avocado and salmon which was disappointing because we expected there to be at least 50/50 of each or more salmon for that matter.
Negitoro roll
We felt like this was the best roll out of the three in taste. They must of put a good amount of freshly chopped negi in there because the flavor of it really showed through. The tuna was fatty and soft just like tuna belly should be.
All in all, Hi Nippon was a pretty decent sushi joint but unfortunately it wasn’t exactly a place we’d go out of our way to revisit because we could get food of this quality closer to home (ex. Sushi garden, Sushi California)
