Happy Valley Seafood Restaurant

We don’t go for dim sum very often but when we do, here are a few staples we always get no matter where we go! Mother deer usually goes to Van Dragon but we weren’t in the area. So, we decided to go to Happy Valley Seafood restaurant instead. All I remember when I come here is how it used to be a Ricky’s and we would go there for pancakes! Oh childhood.

Anyway, we went to Happy Valley Seafood Restaurant on a super busy day. We were given a 2 person table for the 4 of us! It was super squishy but at least we didn’t have to wait right?

After we marked off all the items we wanted, we waited a good 10 minutes before our first dish arrived.

Steamed pork and vegetable dumplings

Be careful when you order these because they do have peanuts inside so if you’re allergic don’t have it! The vegetables are chopped uniformly. But, to be honest there wasn’t much of a flavour to it so it was pretty disappointing. Plus, you can’t dive into these too quickly because otherwise the dumpling wrappers do fall apart!

Shrimp dumplings

These are made of the same tapioca wrapping as the pork and vegetable dumplings. However, for some reason these always tend to be sturdier. The shrimp on the inside was on the salty side but when you eat it together with the plain wrapping, it balances out quite nicely. Sometimes people eat this with soy sauce but we usually eat it without.

BBQ pork buns

Brother deer wanted to have the bbq pork buns but noticed there was a version that had pineapple in it so he decided to adventurous and try it instead. When it came to our table, it looked like a pineapple bun so he figured that the bbq pork buns didn’t have pineapple filling inside and they just wrote it on the menu wrong. Little did he know that there actually were pineapples on the inside! Since the bbq pork buns were already sweet, it didn’t add much to the flavour profile but it was still pretty unique to try!

Steamed meatballs

Brother deer also likes ordering the steamed meatballs. I think it’s more because he likes using the dipping sauce it comes with but there were super big when they came to our table. They don’t add any fillers to these meat balls so it’s straight meat, seasonings and some green onion!

We also ordered a steamed rice roll with beef but for some reason that order didn’t go through and it didn’t end up coming to the table. What did come and I forgot to take a photo of however were the steamed glutinous rice dumplings. It’s essentially glutinous rice and chicken wrapped in bamboo leaves and steamed so that the filling gets cooked. Brother deer and lil’ bun love this dish and they always end up having one each!
