Halo top ice cream review

Halo top has been a protein ice cream company that has gained traction the last couple of years. So much so that many mainstream companies have been coming out with their own versions of low-calorie, high-protein ice cream. I’ve been curious about their desserts for a while so I decided to finally try it out.

I chose the mint chip flavour because it’s one of my favourite ice cream flavours. I was surprised that the ice cream wasn’t the iconic mint green you’d find when you think mint chip. The ice cream did have little specs of chocolate throughout though.

This ice cream was 130 calories for 188 mL which is about 1/3 of the pint. Each serving has 10g of sugar and 7g of protein. The sugar used in their ice cream is the sugar alcohol, erythritol which can cause stomach upset for some people. There are also a few thickeners and gums for texture. I would say that the ingredients are natural for the most part.

Ingredients: Skim Milk, Eggs, Dietary Fibre, Milk Protein Concentrate, Cream, Erythritol, Organic Cane Sugar, Chocolate Chips (Cocoa Mass, Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Milk Fat, Vanilla Extract), Vegetable Glycerin, Sea Salt, Natural Flavours, Organic Carob Gum, Organic Guar Gum, Organic Stevia Extract.

The review

The ice cream tasted like mint chip but it wasn’t a very strong mint flavour. The chocolate specs in it didn’t really add to the ice cream. I’m used to the crunchy chocolate chunks in regular mint chip ice cream and I like that better texture wise. I was surprised as to how sweet this ice cream was. But, it’s because sugar alcohols tend to be sweeter. I couldn’t have more than a few spoons of this before I thought it got too sweet for my liking. The consistency of the ice cream was similar to regular ice cream but it wasn’t as creamy or rich.

Overall, I think that the mint chip ice cream was pretty okay. It doesn’t replace regular ice cream but it’ll satisfy your cravings if you’re trying to meet fitness goals.

A few notes

As much as I appreciate Halo Top’s mission to make dessert low-calorie and macro friendly, I am not a fan of their marketing!

FINALLY, A TREAT YOU CAN FEEL GOOD ABOUT EATING

Halo top website

I’m sorry but there is no need to imply that eating treats aren’t supposed to make you feel good! You should feel good about all the food that you are eating whether it is a treat or not. Eating treats should not be something that we feel guilty about! Everything is about moderation and balance.

If you want to eat ice cream, go enjoy your ice cream. There should be no reason that anyone should be buying low calorie ice cream unless you’re preparing for a physique competition or need to lose weight because of health reasons. I say that because I used to think that low-calorie anything could replace the real thing but that’s not true at all!
