Green and Oak

Green and Oak opened up along Hastings last year to replace Mr. Chili. Instead of serving siuchuan cuisine, Green and Oak offers a variety of Malaysian dishes.

Interior

The interior is homey and modern with woodsy notes and bright pops of colour throughout to brighten it up as if the large windows in the restaurant didn’t bring in enough light already.

The tables even have a little shelf under it for you to put your bags! Super convenient and useful but if you’re someone like me, you’ll end up banging your shins against it far too many times.

Green and Oak menu

The menu here is condensed and is only made up of two pages. One side offers appetizers, their signature Hainanese chicken and rice, Singapore curry rice, and a variety of noodle soups.

On the other side, you can find fried rice and noodle dishes along with their drink and dessert menu.

Tom Yum noodle soup

As usual, I got the Tom Yum noodle soup. I can’t help it it’s just what I crave and always go for! It was not as sweet as the one from Chad Thai which was a plus. However, it didn’t have creaminess in it like the one from Bai Bui Thai. This broth was more on the sour side. As much as I enjoyed the sourness of the broth, I really missed the heat. The chicken in it was moist and tender just the way it should be. There wasn’t much else in there besides a few tomato slices so it would of been nice to see more veggies.

Seafood laksa noodle soup

Raven was going to get the same thing as me which is what normally happens but she wanted to get something different and went with this instead. Apparently this laksa broth is supposed to be spicier than the Tom Yum despite the fact that it has coconut milk to mellow it out.

Raven got this “extra spicy” but still didn’t think it had enough heat since there was just a hint of it at the end. This came with half an egg, tofu and a fishball in addition to the seafood it had. If you’re feeling hungry I would go with this one since it has more toppings. The seafood was cooked from frozen but they were big pieces and the shrimp was even de-shelled so she was very happy with her meal.

Although there’s a variety of restaurants in the Heights area, we were definitely missing a Malaysian restaurant. I’d gladly come again another time to try some of their other dishes and their portions are pretty good considering their prices range from $8.95-12.95 on most dishes.
