Chef Tony

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Chef Tony for a family dinner so I figured that it would warrant another post. The last few times we came here we were super hungry at the beginning because the service took so long to start! One time it took us FOUR HOURS from start to finish which was completely absurd!

This time Chef Tony was smart though because they had little appetizer dishes on the table right when we arrived so we could have something to munch on while we were waiting.

Appetizer plate

The “jelly fish” had no taste to it because they served it as it was without any spices or seasonings. Lil’ bun’s favorite is the shiitake mushrooms wrapped in fried crispy bean curd. There’s a light sweetness to it and held together well.

Wasabi chicken

I am not a fan of wasabi so I never tried this until this visit. The wasabi was strong but there was a creamy aspect to it that helped mellow it out. This was served cold which was confusing for my palette. I didn’t mind it but I wasn’t exceptionally crazy about it either.

Water spinach, eggwhite and crab

I never really like veggies prepared this way because it tends to be salty and I was correct in assuming so because this had loads of salt in it! The water spinach was cooked too much as well and was very wilted.

Sauteed enoki mushrooms and sea cucumber

I didn’t try this but mother deer said it was quite oily and salty because she was unable to taste the true taste of the mushrooms and sea cucumber and could only taste the sauce.

Bird’s nest soup

There wasn’t much to it besides a few strands of bird’s nest here and there so I wasn’t a fan. It sort of just tasted like salty, thick soup? It lacked a depth of flavor

Lobster + crab

The usual deep fried cooked lobster and crab with a cream sauce

Lamb and radish hotpot

Mother deer said that the lamb was fall apart tender and the broth that remained was flavorful from the lamb

Steamed brown sugar cake

My family adores this cake so we always get it. I think it’s a little too sweet for my taste but it was quite soft and fluffy.

Steamed lotus seed paste buns

Since we were here for my grandma’s birthday we had to get these since it’s a tradition to have them on your birthday. It’s like equivalent to having cake! These buns weren’t anything I’ve never had before. Soft steamed bun with a good thick lotus seed filling.

I guess they finally took our criticisms seriously because they served all our entree dishes at once! For once our tables were full of food all at one time which was overwhelming so perhaps it wasn’t the best way to serve it but at least we weren’t left starving and waiting!
