Cafe de l’Orangerie

Hello friends! Grayson and I tried a new French x Japanese fusion cafe the other day and had the most delightful time! We arrived at Cafe de l’Orangerie around 6pm on a Satuday night and it was packed! We were lucky that a table just opened up when we walked through the door. Note for next time, make sure you make a reservation ahead of time!

The menu here at Cafe de l’orangerie is nothing short of spectacular. They offer curry dishes, hayashi rice, pasta and mains. Their flavours are a blend of French and Japanese flavours which surprisingly compliment each other. Grayson and I took way too long to narrow down our choices!

As if their food options weren’t already enticing enough, they also have a variety of desserts to choose from!

Croquette

We decided to start our meal off with the croquette. We’ve had potato and corn croquettes before but we weren’t sure what to expect because the menu didn’t tell us what kind these were. Turns out these golden brown delights were filled with mashed potato, rice and edamame! The exterior was so crispy and light it was unlike anything we’ve had before. We loved how fluffy the interior was and enjoyed the sauce that it came with all the more because it complimented everything so well.

Masago de creamy spaghetti

We heard that this cafe was known for their pasta so we couldn’t leave without trying some. After much deliberation, we decided to go with the Masago de creamy spaghetti. It was spaghetti topped with a tomato cream sauce, mushrooms, squid and masago (fish roe).

We would have liked more sauce on the pasta for more flavour but that’s if we were really being nit-picky. The pasta had seaweed notes to it and we weren’t sure if it was because they added kombu to the sauce or if it was from the frozen squid. Nevertheless, a delicious dish!

Oroshi ponzu hamburger steak

The other dish we decided to get was one of their mains, the oroshi ponzu hamburger steak. It also came with a bowl of rice to have it with but the star of the show was the hamburger steak!

This was no burger patty. It was a substantial piece of protein. The meat was juicy and flavorful. We weren’t sure what blend they put into the hamburger steak but it didn’t taste like meat at all. I don’t mean that in a bad way though so don’t get me wrong. I’m not a fan of red meat because of the taste but I didn’t notice it at all in this burger. There were onions and other things in there to keep it nice and juicy. The ponzu sauce added an extra level of flavour that we thought it really didn’t need because it was so amazing as is.

We’re already thinking about when we’re going to be making our next visit because everything was so delicious! If only we had room for dessert this time around!
