Bonchaz

Sigh, after months of anticipation, I have finally made my way to Bonchaz. Bonchaz’s name comes from their signature bun’s that are a hybrid of the mexican concha bun and the french brioche bun. Two fluffy textured buns meshed together into one ball of delicious cloudy texture? Yumm.

Inside the bakery

Upon walking into the bakery you could already smell the deliciousness that awaits you at in the pastry case. I mean look at them, seriously, look at them! I especially liked that they offered both vegan and gluten-free options. Each bonchaz bun is sold at an affordable $1.75, and they also offer sandwiches for around $6 each.

I chose to get the banana walnut bonchaz along with a Jasmine green tea. The texture of the bun was quite similar to the custard filled pineapple buns found at Asian bakeries. I was surprised as to how fragrant the banana taste came through even though it didn’t look like there was much filling in it. I also liked that there was a contrast to the softness of the bun from the crunchy walnuts on top.

Here’s the inside of the bun, as you can see, the banana filling moved a little while it was being baked so it was only on one side of the bun which was a little disappointing since I expected there to be more of the yummy goodness inside.

If you’re going to give Bonchaz a visit, I highly recommend you get your bun warmed up in the oven because it makes it so much better. Although Bonchaz looks like it has a small store front, if you walk into the back hallway, you’ll see they have a full bakery in the shop. I would come by again when I get the chance because I want to try their specialty green tea bun but they didn’t offer it the day I visited. Not to mention that I need to fill up the buy 6 get 1 free stamp card I got on my visit, I’m already half way there!

Hey eatmuchlove! Thanks for reviewing Bonchaz! The green tea flavour is actually exclusive to our other location at Main and Broadway. Apple cinnamon is also exclusive there too. Come by sometime =)
