I’ve never been a big fan of Malaysian food just because I’m not big on curries or fried rice type dishes but I decided to give it another go so I decided to pay Banana leaf a visit.
The interior of Banana leaf was decorative but not overly so, and I was surprised as to how much seating there actual was on the inside because it didn’t look like a very big restaurant on the outside. Upon being seated the waitress provided us with the menus right away and returned a few minutes later to ask if we had any questions. Hurray for attentive service.
Nonya’s Lettuce Wrap
To start we decided to get the vegetarian version of Nonya’s Lettuce Wrap ($9). It came with four big pieces of lettuce along with a filling made with tofu, spices, jicama, shiitake mushroom, bean sprouts, chives, soy bean sauce, basil and chilli. There was also a dipping sauce on the side as well. I didn’t really taste the heat from the chili in the filling but the basil in it was very aromatic. I love my basil so I liked it quite a bit, but if you’re not big on basil you might shy away from this dish.
Singapore laksa noodle soup
I chose to get the singapore laksa noodle soup ($9) which was rice noodles tofu, egg, chicken, fish cake, squid, beansprout and shrimp in a coconut lemongrass soup. I found that the soup was quite fragrant and heavy in turmeric spice and I would of liked it better if the coconut shown through a little more. The noodles, seafood and chicken wasn’t over cooked so no complaints their either.
I wasn’t aware of this when I ordered this but they have a special on this dish on Mondays and Tuesdays so it was only $6.75 for the whole bowl! I was quite surprised when I got the cheque especially because the portion size was quite satisfying and I couldn’t finish it all.
Curry boneless chicken with coconut rice
My friend ordered the curry boneless chicken with coconut rice ($10 + $0.75 for coconut rice). The chicken breast was prepared in a creamy curry made with lemongrass and coconut cream. There was also egg plant, long beans, bell peppers, carrots and okra in the dish. He liked it quite a bit because the coconut was fragrant and it wasn’t overpoweringly spicy either.
