What to eat in Oregon

Not too long ago, we went on a family road trip to Oregon and while we were there we decided to eat at a few popular spots. The first one we decided to go to was Voodoo donuts because we heard they had dozens of donuts to choose from there.

Originally we were going to go to “Voodoo doughnuts” instead of “Voodoo doughnuts Too” because we were in that neighbourhood first but we had a hard time finding it and when we did…it didn’t seem like an area of Portland where I would want to walk out on the street and go there by myself…just a tad too sketchy for me 🙁 So that’s why we ended up going to the other one! ANYWAYS,  I’m guessing they used to be a food truck because parked outside the building, they had a few donut transporting vehicles for you to look at which I thought was pretty cool because I’ve never seen anything like it before.

I don’t know if we just got lucky because we got there late afternoon but we were surprised to see that there wasn’t a line out the door! Upon entering the building we were greeted with the most amazing smell of donuts baking in the oven and their furniture didn’t stray too far from their theme either because they were definitely not short on coffin shaped chairs.

Donuts we tried

We decided to get four donuts and starting from the top left going clockwise, here they are…

McMinnville Cream: a yeast donut filled with Bavarian cream and topped with maple frosting and a cute mustache

Voodoo Doll: a yeast donut filled with raspberry jelly topped with chocolate frosting with a pretzel stake to the heart

Captain my Captain: a yeast donut topped with frosting and Captain Crunch cereal

Old Dirty Bastard: a yeast donut topped with chocolate frosting, crushed oreos and peanut butter drizzle on top

Lil’ bun and brother deer said that the donuts were pretty standard in that there was nothing special about them in terms of donut texture but they enjoyed their unique donut offerings

Blue Star donuts

Our next food stop in Oregon was Blue Star donuts because brother deer heard that they had the most unique delicious donuts here from his friends. I liked the look of the look of the cafe because it looked really clean and modern. They also had lots of posters of sayings on all their walls. What I was most surprised about upon entering the cafe was how little donuts there were in the display case!

You would think that there would be rows upon rows of delicious donuts to look at but there wasn’t! So where were the donuts? I asked brother deer about this and apparently they’re only open until they sell out of donuts! The two donuts we decided to try was the Blueberry Basil Bourbon  and the Passion Fruit carob.

Blueberry basil

Brother deer said that the Blueberry Basil was one of their hottest sellers so we got lucky when we found out that we bought the last one of the day! This donut surprised me because I didn’t expect it to have such a flavorful glaze in that the basil was really prominent in flavor and it was definitely the flavor that stuck out to me the most. It wasn’t too sweet either so that was a plus.

On the other hand, the Passion Fruit carob donut was on the sweeter side. The passion fruit flavor was strong but maybe a little too much because it made it much too sweet. We all agreed that we wouldn’t be able to have more than a bite of this donut. With the flavors of the donuts aside, the texture of them was nice and fluffy soft on the inside. I’m not a huge fan of donuts but if I had to have a donut, I’d definitely get them from here and I would choose these over the ones at Voodoo because their flavors are more unique (in a different way) and they are worth the slightly higher price 🙂

Nong’s

If it wasn’t for food network…I wouldn’t of found out about Nong’s. Which would of been a complete bummer because it was amazing. Unlike most food stands out there, Nong’s only serves one main dish…her delicious chicken and rice ($8). At first you may think that sounds really simple and plain but perfecting a dish takes time and dedication.

The chicken was amazingly moist and flavorful, and the soup was delicious. But what really took the cake in the dish was the SAUCE. Oh that sauce. The perfect blend of spices. Mother deer was definitely impressed with the sauce and she doesn’t get impressed like this very often. On top of that, both brother deer and lil’ bun loved it as well! Mother deer asked if we wanted to buy a bottle of the sauce but we were already too far behind on road trip schedule at this point so we couldn’t so until next time!

  1. Voodoo has always been a brick and mortar shop. They recently added a mobile fleet to bring their doughnuts to special events and festivals. If you get a chance to go back, you MUST try the maple bacon bar. It’s what they’re known for (and is pretty great, if I do say so myself).

    Also, Nong’s rocks.

    1. Thanks for the info! I love learning new things about places like this! Any more recommendations?

      1. Plenty! Since you asked…

        Lunch: Lardo, Little Big Burger
Dinner: Tasty ‘n Sons, Miss Delta, Veritable Quandary, Beast
Dessert: Salt & Straw Ice Cream

And that’s just food and drinks!

      2. Oh, and food carts (besides Nong’s): 808 Grinds, The Dump Truck, The People’s Pig, The Frying Scotsman.

        1. We were going to go to Salt and Straw but we ran out of time! 🙁 But now I have a boatload of places to go next time! Thanks a bunch 🙂
