vancouver christmas market wunderbar food

Hello friends and welcome to part 2 of the Vancouver Christmas market posts! If you missed out on part 1, not to worry because you can catch up by going here. My first post was all about what’s new to the Christmas Market. This time it’ll be about the delicious food you can get there and yes, there’s a lot to get through!

Organic Villa Vegan Haus

I find that whenever I go to festivals, it’s hard to find vegan options so I was happy to see that they offered one here at the Organic Villa Vegan Haus. Here you can find Veggie Dosas with an assortment of sauces to dip them in.

If you’ve never had a dosa before, it’s essentially a wrap made out of a fermented batter that is filled with a protein. It’s quite similar to having a crepe but crispier. Dosas are usually made quite large but they cut them up here so it’s easier to eat. They do however, put a large one out on display for you to see how they would usually look like.

Dosas aren’t the only thing they offer though so if you aren’t a fan of them, they also offer vegan burgers, tacos, wraps, and organic vegetable juices.

Freybe Brat Haus

For the meat eaters, you have to head on over to Freybe Brat Haus for traditional Hot Grilled Brats. Bratwaurst sausages are a little different than your typical hot dog sausage because it’s German sausage and can be made from veal, beef, or pork. Don’t forget to say “YES” to saurkraut if you get one!

Taste the wild

Taste the Wild is one of Canada’s most popular mushroom companies and not only can you buy their mushrooms at the market but you can try some of them at their food stall!

They may serve grilled cheese sandwiches but I think that their biggest seller is the Wild Mushroom Soup. It’s unlike any mushroom soup I’ve had before and is so amazingly creamy! The mushrooms are cut into small pieces so it’s easy to drink and it’s so warming to have on a cold day.

Cheese Me Raclette

Cheese Me Raclette is a booth that Lil’ bun and I both wanted to try last year but the line was just too long.

So what is a Raclette? It is what happens when half a wheel of cheese is heated under a heat lamp and then the melted cheese is scraped onto something.

Make sure you have your phones out for this because it makes an amazing Boomerang or Insta post!

You can choose to have the cheese over potatoes of in a sandwich at Cheese Me Raclette but I would say that it’s best on potatoes because they go so well together! The plate of potatoes also come with a few pickles to add some acidity to the creaminess of the cheese. I liked that they had this because otherwise I think it would have been too heavy of a dish.

Other savory offerings include Haxen Haus where you can get pork hock (we tried this last year), Das Fleischkäse Haus, Das Schnitzel Haus, Das Spätzle Haus, Das Gulasch Haus, and Pearls Perogies.

Now that we have gone through some of the savory items on the menu, here are some of the sweeter options.

Mr. Hotcakes

Mr. Hotcakes offers fresh off the griddle stuffed hotcakes that are topped with clotted cream and maple syrup to make them all the more decadent.

I tried the one stuffed with brown sugar and it was absolutely amazing! The pancake batter was unlike any that I’ve ween before because it was slightly flaky and reminded me of pastry dough. I wouldn’t say that it resembled a breakfast style pancake by any means but it was equally as delicious!

Pretzel Haus

Pretzels are one of my favourite things in the world! Pretzel Haus knows how to do them right because their pretzels are so addictingly chewy and soft. They also have someone rolling and making each one by hand so it’s quite the entertaining line-up to be in.

They offer their pretzels in two versions, either with sea salt and butter or cinnamon sugar. Deciding which version to get was one of the hardest parts about the whole experience!

Das Kuchen Haus

Das Kuchen Haus is a cake shop where you can enjoy German cakes and pastries like Berliners (jam filled donuts), Apple Strudel, and Bienenstich (bee-sting cakes). They also offer Hot chocolate for the kiddos and Naughty Hot Chocolate (with a shot of liqueur) for adults.

Their Berliners come in two different flavors, the apple pie or strawberry. I felt like getting into the festive spirit so I decided to go with the apple pie. This donut wasn’t light on the filling and you had some with every bite. The donut was fluffy and dusted lightly with sugar on the outside. Truly a delight.

Bon Macaron Patisserie

I’m not sure if Bon Macaron Patisserie is a new addition to the market but they are definitely a very welcome stall. I saw numerous people walking off with tubes of these throughout the market! Bon Macaron has locations in the lower mainland and offer a wide variety of specialty macaron flavors.

I usually find macarons to be too sweet for my licking but these were amazing! I believe they were passion fruit and raspberry flavors. They were so jam packed with fruity flavor that you could almost taste them just from their smell alone. This is not a booth you would want to miss on if you are a macaron fan.

Das Apfelhaus

Last but certainly not least we have Das Apfelhaus, a stall dedicated to Candied Apples. This stall is located close to the Christmas Pyramid located in the centre of the market. They offer two varieties of the apples, one being coated in red sugar and the other being caramel.

I don’t have a lot of experience with caramel apples but these were pretty darn good. The caramel had vanilla notes and didn’t just have a sugary taste to it. They also come in a convenient case so that you don’t need to worry about it sticking to anything in your bag.
