Sopra Sotto Pizzeria

Sopra Sotto Pizzeria recently opened their second location on Burnaby Height so of course I had to go check it out. Actually, Sopra Sotto Pizzeria was supposed to open over the summer but I guess things must have taken longer than expected because they only opened earlier this month.

Interior

The interior looked completely different than the Turkish deli that used to own the spot. It looked modern and sleek with the walls being white with a few accent walls. I thought that they would only have dining tables but they had bar seating as well.

We went at around 5pm on a weekday and we ended up being the only people dining there at the time. At around 6pm, people started to trickle in for dinner but it wasn’t filling up too quickly.

Sopra Sotto Pizzeria Menu

Sopra Sotto’s menu is quite condensed compared to most of the Italian restaurants I’ve been to. They have a few antipasti dishes, a few pasta options and both vegetarian and meat pizzas to choose from.

Vegetariana pizza

We decided to go with the Vegetariana pizza ($17) which came with an assortment of grilled vegetables, mozarella and grana cheese. Oracle has an obsession with zucchini on her pizza and I just like rainbow veggies so this was an obvious choice for us.

The pizzas here are made Neapolitan style which means that they’re cooked in a wood-fire oven. I thought that the center of the pizza was a little under cooked because it was on the limp side. The edges however, were nice and crispy.

We were both excited about the veggies and they went well with the nice generous layer of mozzarella cheese. Come to think of it, I don’t even remember if it came with any tomato sauce because of how cheesy it was!

Tiramisu

We couldn’t leave without dessert so we had to try the tiramisu. We had high expectations for this dessert because it was $8 and we were at an Italian restaurant. Luckily, it was. I’m not sure that it was worth $8 but it was pretty darn good.

The layers of lady finger biscuits were adequately soaked so they were nice and flavorful. The mascarpone cheese was whipped to creamy perfection and the dusting of dark chocolate on top tied everything together nicely. If you’re not a fan of tiramisu, you’ll definitely be converted once you try this.

Quick bites:

  1. Modern “fancy” feel
  2. Neapolitan style pizza
  3. Great tiramisu

  1. Great review again, Cynthia. Makes me want to go there right now, since I just returned from Nizza (Liguria) and I liked the thin crust pizzas there a lot. Keep up the good work.
