Snickerdoodles

Lil’ bun and I LOVE our CINNAMON. We love everything and anything with cinnamon in it. That’s why we had to make these snickerdoodles! Snickerdoodles are a cinnamon cookie that has a crack;e pattern on top.

Snickerdoodles

Snickerdoodles are cookies that are unique in and of themselves because their tops are branded with a signature crackle pattern.

This pattern is produced as a result of adding cream of tartar to the cookie dough. Of course, you can still make these delightful cookies without the addition of cream of tartar but you’ll just miss out on the crackle on top.

How you ever wondered why snickerdoodles were called snickerdoodles…? I mean, why aren’t they just called cinnamon sugar cookies?

Some say that snickerdoodles is derived from the German pastry “schneckennudeln” or “snail noodles.” Others say that they were invented by the Romans.

Then there’s those who believe that it’s the English just coined the term spontaneously because they needed a name for this cinnamony treat.

My favorite story is one where the name was derived from a tall tale hero who’s name was “doodle man” who left a trail of cinnamon sugar after helping out children in need.

What’s your favorite story? Or do you have your own explanation for the name?

Snickerdoodles recipe

Ingredients (makes 12)

1/2 cup coconut oil (or butter or margarine)
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg (or 1 tablespoon ground flax + 2 tablespoons water)
3/4 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 cup flour (I like to use a mix of whole wheat and white)
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt

topping mixture: 2 tablespoons sugar + 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Method:

1. Cream the sugar and coconut oil/butter/margarine together in a large bowl until creamy. Whisk in the egg and vanilla. 2. Sift the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, cinnamon and salt into the creamed mixture. Stir everything together with a wooden spoon until a dough forms. At this point you may chill your dough in the fridge for 1 hour if your dough doesn’t feel stiff enough to roll into balls.   3. Spoon a tablespoon of the dough into your hand and roll it into a ball. Roll the dough into your cinnamon sugar topping mixture.   4. Place cookies onto a lined or greased cookie sheet and bake at 375F for 10 – 12 minutes.   5. Let cool for 5 minutes before munching!
