Pokey Okey Burnaby location

Poke shops have been the newest trend in Vancouver. They’re starting to pop up all over the place and I’m loving it! Pokey Okey is the newest addition to the Burnaby scene and it’s located across from Metrotown, a few store fronts down from Onezo. Pokey Okey has another location in Richmond as well.

This past weekend they had a grand opening even for their second location so of course Grayson and I had to go check it out! They were offering free small signature bowls for 6 hours a day!

The prep Pokey Okey did for this was AMAZING. The line went smoothly and you didn’t have to wait too long before getting in. Mind you, Grayson and I were at the front of the line but even then, the assembly was very fast.

Pokey Okey’s signature bowls

You got to choose between their 3 signature bowls. They have build your own bowl options as well if you prefer to make your own creation.

The store front isn’t very large. Once you walk in you’re greeted by the prep stations. The way they set it up for the event was each bowl had a different station. This way the person making it only had to focus on making one thing which was beneficial to their successful launch event!

Fresh ingredients

All the ingredients here are fresh and you could tell that they really focus on presentation despite being so busy because every bowl they put out looked perfect! They do good portion control here using electronic scales to measure the proteins and ice cream scoops to measure toppings. I like this because it ensures that every bowl is the same.

Across from the prep station, there is a pink wall where you can write all over with chalk! By the time we got there, it was already pretty full but we still found some “real estate” for me to leave a mark too!

Yellow bowl

This bowl was the sweetest of the 3 signature bowls because it had sweet egg omelette, pineapple salsa and corn. The proteins for this was salmon and scallop. I liked that it also had wakame seaweed and pickled onions to add another element of flavour. If you’re a fan of sweet and savory flavours, this it he perfect choice for you. I’m not sure if it was because they had to prep a lot of rice but the rice was a bit softer than I’m used.

Green bowl

This was the crunchiest of all the bowls. The proteins it came with were ahi tuna and salmon. Other toppings included edamame, fish roe, wakame seaweed, purple cabbage and wasabi peas. I’m not usually a fan of wasabi but I quite enjoyed the wasabi mayo and peas on top because it added a dull heat to the bowl.

Red bowl

This one is for all the spicy food lovers out there and it’s my favorite out of the 3. It has spicy tuna and salmon, wakame, kimchi, pickled carrots, cabbage and fish roe. It literallly has all my favorite things in one bowl! The sauce this one comes with is their spicy mayo. I love how this bowl is a mix of crunchy, sour and spicy flavours. Love love love this one!
