Milltown Bar and Grill: Dine out Vancouver 2020

It’s that time of the year again! Dine out Vancouver! This year we started off at Milltown Bar and Grill. We were supposed to try it out last year but we ended up visiting a different spot instead so we were glad that the Milltown Bar and Grill menu this year was just as enticing!

Milltown Bar and Grill’s location is a bit hidden on a small peninsula on the border of Richmond and West Vancouver. We were a bit confused looking for it because you pass a car junk yard and lots of boats before reaching the right place!

Even though we were at Milltown Bar and Grill on a Sunday evening, the restaurant was quite busy on the inside so we decided to sit on the heated patio. This wasn’t too bad of a choice though because you could overlook the boats on the water. Unfortunately it was getting pretty dark by the time we got there so we missed the sunset but I can imagine it being gorgeous earlier in the day.

Crab cake

It came with a peach salsa and sriracha lime cream. The crab cake looked very uniform as though it came from frozen. The exterior was golden brown but it wasn’t crispy so it was a bit disappointing. I wish there was more crab on the inside too because most of it felt like just vegetable filling. The peach salsa on top added sweetness to balance out the spice from the cream sauce.

Since Grayson and I both couldn’t agree on an entree, we decided to get one of each of the ones we wanted.

Yellow Fin Tuna

The Yellow Fin Tuna came with a sesame crust to add texture and nuttiness. We really liked how there was a contrast between the crunchy exterior of the tuna and the soft interior. The tuna had a light glaze on it but I don’t think it added much flavour. It was supposed to come with soy braised bok choy but it ended up coming with broccolini instead. We didn’t mind though because who doesn’t love trying new vegetables?

Grayson loved how the basmati rice had a very nice coconut aroma, however I thought it was a bit on the dry side. We were excited about the wasabi cream that it came with but the amount was so scant it was barely enough to cover one of the small tuna pieces! A bit of a hit and miss with this dish.

Kobe Rigatoni

We felt the same about the Kobe Rigatoni. There were some highlights like the house-made bolognaise and the globe of 5oz Kobe beef and pork, and low lights like the sauce. The pasta was cooked al dente and we were surprised as to how much meat was in the bowl.

Not only was there a giant meatball but there was also plenty of ground pork from the bolognaise sauce. The house-made ricotta was extra soft and added richness without overwhelming the dish. Then as if you didn’t have enough carbs on our plate, there were two slices of grilled focaccia style garlic bread on the side.

The only disappointing part about this dish was how runny the pasta sauce was. The sauce didn’t adhere to the noodles which ultimately made them taste plain despite the fact that there was lots of meat to help flavour it.

Cheesecake sampler

Last but not least is the mini cheesecake sampler. It came with mini 1″ x 1″ cubes of cheesecake in 4 different flavours; New York, Strawberry, Caramel Chocolate and Creme Brulee. The cheesecakes were rich and we ended up enjoying the strawberry one the best because of how fruity it was. The chocolate and creme brulee were on the sweet side so if you have a sweet tooth, those would be perfect for you!
