Malaysian is one of those cuisines that are so hard to come by in Burnaby. So when mother deer told me about Malay Curry house, it was inevitable that I paid them a visit the following weekend.

Similarly to some of the Hong Kong cafes here, you have the option of choosing a soup base, topping and noodles for your noodle soup.
Assam noodle soup
I decided to get the Assam style soup because I never tried this type of soup before. I really liked that they had a brief description of what to expect out of each soup beside the photos too! The Assam soup has a tamarind base and is described as being both spicy, sweet and sour at the same time.
Unfortunately, I didn’t find the soup to be very spicy or have much depth of flavor at all. More than anything it tasted like really sweet canned tomato soup…which was disappointing for me because I had high hopes for it.
However, the fact that the bowl had an abundant amount of fish fillet and rice noodles made me feel a little better about the lack of soup quality.
Grayson decided to get curry because he hadn’t had it in a while. Just like the noodle soup, you got to choose the type of curry you wanted along with the protein it came with.
Mango curry with chicken
Grayson decided to try the mango curry with chicken because he’s never seen a mango based curry before. Despite being excited about the dish, he was underwhelmed by what arrived in front of him because there was only three pieces of chicken inside the bowl and one measly piece of potato.
He also said that the curry was very thick, chunky and way too sweet for him…which was odd because it was spicy at the same time. Oh and he made me promise to mention that there was a very sad looking “pile” of pickled veggies on the side of his plate as “garnish”
So being that he was still hungry at the end of all it, he decided to order something off the appetizer menu to “supplement” his meal
Chicken satay skewers
Grayson opted to get the chicken satay skewers. He didn’t like the sauce it came with but he said that the chicken skewers went well with his mango curry. He said the chicken was grilled well and not too dry but he’s had better elsewhere.
Needless to say, we both had high hopes for Malay curry house but we were left disappointed with our meals. 🙁 Malay curry house definitely doesn’t stand a chance next to one of the major Malaysian restaurants in Vancouver but if you’re ever craving cheap (almost authentic) Malaysian food in Burnaby, give this place a go!
