Hon sushi

We went to Hon sushi for a family dinner. Hon sushi replaced what used to be Fish on Rice on top of Earls along Hastings in the complex with IGA located diagonally across from Metrotown.

They had an extensive menu but since we went a week after they opened, a lot of their items weren’t in stock and we were unable to try a majority of their Korean items and they didn’t have lots of sashimi items in stock either.

This ended up being really frustrating later on because not only were we disappointed we were unable to try a few dishes we wanted, the server/kitchen staff didn’t communicate well and they didn’t end up letting us know that the items weren’t going to come to our table so we ended up waiting for those items for what seemed like forever.

Takoyaki

fried octopus balls

Over done on the outside because it was almost tempura crispy if that makes any sense? Pretty doughy filling as well.

Takoyaki fried octopus balls

Assorted tempura

there wasn’t a description for this one so we assumed it came with both veggies and shrimp but boy we were wrong…it was just all veggies and for $11…we were not impressed. The batter was pretty crispy though but at the same time it was a little too thick

Assorted tempura

Potato croquette

The potato croquette was filled with mashed kabocha squash. The exterior was well fried and remained crispy which was a nice contrast against the soft interior.

Ebi sunomono

Really really big bowl which is good value wise but I thought it was a little odd that 1) the broccoli was partially brown and 2) the bowl it was served in didn’t allow for the noodles to be in the “soup”

Sashimi salad

Had a 2 slices of tuna sashimi, 2 slices of salmon sashimi, few pieces of octopus, and then imitation crab. The salad was interesting in that they had segmented orange slices in there which I thought was pretty awesome because it added a nice pop.

Deep fried california roll

These were well battered and fried on the outside. The menu could of indicated that there was spicy mayo on top though because lil’ bun ended up being disappointed that she wasn’t able to try it.

awesome roll (right): cucumber, avocado, crab, masago, with cooked salmon and fried sweet potato on top

Specialty rolls

ever green roll (left): cucumber, tempura asparagus, oshinko, spinach, carrot wrapped with soy bean paper

rainbow roll (middle): california roll with slices of tuna, salmon, tako, tai, ebi or hokkagai on top

philadelphia roll (top right): cream cheese, red pepper, crab, mango, smoked salmon on top

mango ebi roll (bottom right): crab, mango, cucumber, ebi on top

rainbow rolls, ever green roll

Deluxe assorted sashimi

simply put…not fresh…like at all. There wasn’t any “fish” flavor in anything either…suspicious…?

Deluxe assorted sashimi

Masago, chopped scallop, tako, ika, and ebi nigiris

As with the deluxe sashimi, the seafood here didn’t taste very fresh and you can already kind of tell by looking at the colour of the ebi and ika. Typically squid (ika) is a clear bright white colour but it was looking a little cloudy here :/

Sushi rolls

Dynamite roll (top left) + Tamago roll (top right): your typical rolls

Chicken teriyaki roll (bottom): not a lot of chicken on the inside….2/3 of the roll was made up of cucumber

Beef bulgolgi

uhh…what is up with all the liquid at the bottom? There was barely any beef and since they were sliced so thinly they were really dry and tough.

Beef bulgolgi

Japchae

The sauce was really loose so the noodles were on the watery side. There was also wood ear mushrooms in there which isn’t a traditional ingredient in japchae so we questioned the the authenticity of this dish…despite the fact that this restaurant is Korean owned…

Seafood udon

Nothing special; had 2 shrimp, 1 mussel, and tofu puff
