Gyu Kaku

gyu kaku sashimi

Grayson and I went to happy hour at Gyu-Kaku because we haven’t had tapas in a while. I’ve never been to Gyu-Kaku before but I’ve walked by it several times before when I was in Asia.

Gyu Kaku menu

They have happy hour everyday from 4 – 6 and a majority of their menu items end up being half price so it’s a good place to go if you’re looking to try Korean BBQ for cheap

And of course, they had 3 signature sauces to offer. Soy, spicy and garlic. They also had instructions on how to use chopsticks on the back of the wrapper.

We actually had a lot of questions to ask our server but unfortunately, ours was a trainee and didn’t really know how to answer our questions or understand what we were saying. So we kind of just gave up asking him things

Fried gyoza dumplings

These were fried well and crispy on the outside. They said that there was a good ratio of filling to wrapper too and were happy with what they got especially if there were for $2.95

Edamame

Nothing much to say here. Just Edamame with salt. Although we found it weird that the salt was sprinkled on top because it wasn’t really infused in the peas or anything they were just..there?

Salmon poke

We kind of expected there to be more salmon for the price? Mind you this was already happy hour pricing! There was barely any in the bowl and there was actually more garnish than anything in there. But it was tasty so I guess it’s partly justified?

Takoyaki

I wasn’t impressed by this. These were probably the worst takoyaki I’ve ever had! Although they looked crispy and well brown on the outside, they were soggy! How does that even happen? We tried to grill them on the grill to try to salvage them but…that didn’t really work either.

Chicken kaarage

Grayson was perfectly happy with the portion and taste of everything int he bowl. He said the aioli had heat to it which balanced out the saltiness of the chicken. No complaints from him.

At first, our server actually brought him chicken kaarage minus the rice because that was also a menu item. Except we were extremely confused as to why he did this because Grayson literally pointed at the picture of it and it was confirmed 3 times!

Spicy tofu chigae soup

I decided to get this because I read lots of good things about it but I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED. It was terrible! It was bland and not even spicy. Then to top it all off all that was in there was 2 pieces of overcooked pork, 5 pieces of tofu and one measly piece of cabbage. I was actually in disbelief. I literally paid $1 per item in that bowl and to make it worse, this bowl is originally $8.95!!! Absurd!
