Fat mao noodles

So a couple of weeks ago I went to Ramen Butcher  with Mother deer and a next to Ramen Butcher, you will find Fat Mao noodles. Fat mao noodles doesn’t have a very noticeable storefront so make sure you keep an eye out for it!

I didn’t think the interior matched the name of the restaurant but it was still pretty nice on the inside. It had a modern woodsy feel.

I wasn’t sure what type of menu to expect since it was a “noodle shop.” I would say it’s a Thai restaurant with a bit of Vietnamese influence. Don’t you think this is the funnest looking menu ever?

Thai coconut and mushroom noodle soup

This is the Thai coconut and mushroom noodle soup. You get to choose the type of noodles but we figured rice noodles would go with it best. Mother Deer said that the mushrooms AND baby corn were all fresh. Fresh baby corn is hard to come by since they’re usually the canned but not the ones here. Mother deer thought that the noodles were priced a little higher than she’s used to for a bowl of noodles but the freshness of the ingredients justify the costs.

Thai rice soup

This was something new and reminded me of one of my favorite Japanese rice dishes, ochazuke. It was basically a savory Thai broth over rice. So it’s a little like congee but not boiled down if that helps you picture how it’s like better. Or maybe a little like when you eat Korean tofu soup and you get some of that broth in your bowl of rice. Regardless, I adore these types of homey dishes and you can’t beat anything topped with a gooey soft poached egg am I right?

I always enjoy a bowl of soupy noodles (e.g. ramen), so it looks like I should stop by here if Pnomh Penh is fuller than a 20 minute wait 😀
