Cafe Gelo

Hello and welcome to another instalment of…things I ate in Lisbon! Cafe Gelo is a chain spot in Lisbon and you can find quite a few of them around. Although it sounds like Cafe Gelo just serves gelato, they have so much more than that. They also serve pastries, coffee, tea, sandwiches, and main dishes!

Portuguese roll

We decided to start with the Portuguese roll because that’s one of the things Portugal is known for. Unfortunately, it didn’t have any flavour and was very dry since there is no sauce on it. The pork chop was also quite thin so it was a little tough.

Although there were lots of main dish options available, we were all enticed by the paellas so we decided to get two kinds.

Seafood paella

It was filled to the brim with bell peppers, peas, olives, shrimp, prawns, and mussels. The rice was fragrant from being seasoned with turmeric which was nice. We were all very impressed with this dish because it was so beautiful and colourful looking. It was also very delicious.

Squid Ink Paella

The entire dish was a dark charcoal colour from the ink and it was a bit on the salty side. The dish also had peas, squid, shrimp, black olives and a few mussels. Although it was a squid ink paella, there wasn’t a lot of squid in it. There also wasn’t a lot of rice compared to the seafood paella we had so we were definitely underwhelmed when this came after the seafood version.

White chocolate raspberry gelato

We decided to get white chocolate raspberry gelato since we’ve never had it before and it was a unique blend of both sweet and sour berry notes. We enjoyed how balanced the flavours of the gelato was. It was the perfect way to end off the evening.

Almond pastry

Old bean was also hungry so he got an almond pastry. The pastry was flaky and covered in sugar to add texture. There wasn’t a lot of almond flavour to it but it was nice to try something new!
