Biercraft – Commercial location

biercraft vietnamese mussels

Hello friends! It’s been a while since I’ve been so excited to share about a new restaurant, Biercraft. Last week, I was invited to try some of the items on the new Biercraft menu. I was delightfully surprised by how many international flavours they incorporated into their menu.

Only at Biercraft would the drink menu be in a book and the food menu be on a piece of cardstock. Although I’m no beer drinker, I did appreciate that they had a large variety of craft beers available on tap. For the indecisive, they have beer flights so you can try a few at once.

Food menu

Biercraft is known as a Belgian bar but they actually had quite a bit of variety on their menu. Items include tacos, Chinese noodles, fusion style mussels, and more!

When we arrived, we received a little bowl of cheddar popcorn to munch on. I appreciated because sometimes it takes a while for food to come. The popcorn was starting to get stale being that it was sitting in a giant bin all day.

Drinks

NI’m not a fan of beer so I asked what I should go for. I was recommended an option that was in between a beer and a cider. It really just tasted like apple juice. Grayson went with his usual Kronenbourg and said that it tasted way better on tap than out of a bottle.

We decided to start our meal with seafood starters because we knew that we were having substantial entrees.

Vietnamese Mussels

Their mussels come in either 1/2 pound or 1 pound portions. We went with the 1/2 pound because we were going to be getting entrees. 1/2 pound was definitely enough for the two of us. The mussels come in 4 different varieties, the classic garlic butter, a Vietnamese, a Cajun and a Bombay. We decided to be adventurous and tried the Vietnamese. This was such a good call because they were AMAZING. The sauce it came with was spicy and salty at the same time. It probably wouldn’t be good for anyone who isn’t a fan of spicy food but if you can handle it, you won’t regret ordering it.

Sesame tuna

The other starter we got was the sesame tuna. The tuna was so red that it looked as though we were having actual steak. There was a wasabi mayo sauce that came with it. We didn’t use it because we preferred to enjoy the freshness of the fish as is. You could tell by the light flavour of the red tuna that it was quality seafood. The sesame seeds on the outside were a little large so some of it fell off while we were eating. We thought it overpowered the fish flavour. We didn’t mind though because it was so delicious.

Steak frites

Grayson went with the steak frites. You could also choose to add another steak medallion to it but Grayson opted not to because we said we were going to get dessert. However, when the dish came to the table he regretted it because there wasn’t much going on on the plate.

Originally the dish came with frites but he swapped it for a salad because neither of us were really getting greens that night. The salad was mostly baby kale and it had a light dressing on top. The steak was cooked medium rare and seasoned well. Then to take it to another level, blue cheese was added on top so that the flavor would melt into the steaks.

Cauliflower risotto

I decided to try something different for my entree and went with the cauliflower risotto and I added the sambal prawns to it. This wasn’t a good choice because it was nothing like risotto and even though it was cheesy in flavour it was missing the creaminess that you would find in a rice risotto. On the bright side, the sambal prawns were a delight and while the cook was slightly uneven, overall they were a delight!

Our server came to check on us and realized that I wasn’t loving the dish. Being that I don’t like to cause trouble, I said it was okay but she insisted and listed some suggestions. In the end, I went with the dan dan noodles.

Tan tan noodles

The tan tan noodles were unlike any I’ve had before because it was soupless! Instead it was more like a saute of ramen noodles in a sesame, soy and sweet sauce. The sauce was a little too sweet for my liking being that this is usually more of a spicy dish but it was well made so I didn’t mind. It usually comes with pork but at Biercraft, you can swap it for beyond meat sausages instead free of charge! Yes! Grayson was surprised by how meat-like it was even though it was vegan. It was definitely interesting. The ramen eggs on top had golden gooey yolks and instead of being marinated, they were pickled so it added a nice element of flavour to the noodles.

Banoffee

We were both pretty full by now but I just couldn’t help but order dessert so I decided to get the Banoffee since they said it was the smallest dessert of the 4. Instead of being served in pie form, this was more like a parfait with layers of oreos and banana whipped cream before being topped with caramelized banana. The oreo could have been crushed a little more because some of them were pretty big chunks but otherwise it was alright. It wasn’t as good as the food we’ve had but it was a sweet way to end off the evening.
