VIRAL Brown sugar boba ice cream bars

Brown Sugar Boba Ice Cream Bars are sweeping Vancouver by a storm. They have become all the craze this summer and they’ve gone so viral that they’re consistently sold out in stores! Shao Mei Brown Sugar Boba Ice Cream is the bar that started it all. So, I decided to try the ones from them first.

These brown sugar boba bars are meant to taste exactly like brown sugar milk tea. The bars are typically made with a rich milky base, drizzled with brown sugar and speckled with tapioca pearls. Note: these boba bars are not meant to taste like milk tea so if you are expecting it to have tea flavour, you’ll be left disappointed.

My thoughts

I didn’t know what to expect when I was trying the ice cream bar for the first time but I was intrigued. The ice cream bar was very rich, creamy and tasted like vanilla with caramel notes. I was surprised that the brown sugar wasn’t marbled into the ice cream bar. Instead the brown sugar syrup was only on the outside of the bar. The brown sugar was also made similarly to a syrup so it didn’t have a creamy texture. The ice cream bars were on the sweet side but that is to be expected from ice cream.

What surprised me the most about these bars was how chewy the tapioca pearls were! I would think that they would be firm because if you put bubble tea in the fridge the pearls get hard. Needless to say, I thought the pearls were the best part!

Overall, I did enjoy the flavour and texture of these bars but they do melt very quickly so make sure you get them in the freezer upon purchasing. I only had these out for 5 minutes on the way home and they were already on the melty side. I’d suggest you eat them right after you purchase them or have an ice pack ready for the trip home.

This particular box of Brown Sugar Boba Ice Cream Bars were $8 for 4. Compared to other ice cream bars, they are on the pricier side but they are worth the novelty. I can see why these bars have gone viral and would try another brand next time to see how they compare to the ones from Shao Mei.

Have you tried these ice cream bars before? Which ones? Let me know in the comments!
