The Mexican

Hello friends! I can’t believe that summer is just around the corner! To celebrate the school year coming to an end, Nat and I went to The Mexican for tacos. I’ve never been here before because I usually get tacos at Tacofino but Nat said that the food at The Mexican was pretty good so we decided to go here instead.

The Mexican taco combo

I decided to try 4 of their tacos for $11 because I felt like having some variety instead of just ordering an entree. The tacos came with a side of cilantro, lime, onions and salsa. The salsa is not a fresh tomato salsa, instead it is more of a hot sauce consistency but you could tell that it was house-made in a blender and not a jar. They do also have hot sauce at the table if you’re in the mood for more heat.

MILANESA

Breaded top sirloin steak in a bed of red Mexican rice

This one was a disappointment. The meat was dry and the rice only added to the dryness. I put salsa and lime juice on it but it didn’t help.

POLLO

Shredded chicken in a light tomato sauce This was more of the same. Even though there was a good amount of chicken on the taco, it had no flavor to it so again, I wasn’t very impressed with this one.

PASTOR

Thinly grilled pork slices in adobo sauce

The pork was evidently over-cooked because it was dry and almost jerky-like in texture. The salsa helped enhance the spices in the adobo sauce but I don’t think you need to have sauce on food to make it flavorful.

CARNITAS

Secret recipe for a tender braised pork

I wouldn’t exactly describe the braised pork as tender but it was pretty soft. In my mind, I think braised pork is juicy, flavorful and tender but it wasn’t the case here at all.By this taco, I was pretty much certain that tacos were NOT their specialty.

Milanesa entree

Nat said that she tried the Milanesa entree here last time and it tasted good so maybe the conclusion here is that their entrees are the better choice here? It was almost as though they pre-cooked all the taco toppings and because it sat there, it dried out and once it was reheated, it became overcooked. Needless to say, I left disappointed.
