I’m one of those people who can’t get enough of Japanese food and Shizenya has been one of my favorites for a long time. I usually go to the one downtown but we were coming back from school one day and went by the Granville location so we decided to Shizenya broadway instead.

I’ve only had the chicken curry here so this time we decided to try something different. We got two of my favorites; sashimi and shrimp sunomono.

Sashimi

The tuna was melt in your mouth smooth and you could tell that the salmon was wild caught based on the colour of it. I’m used to getting my sunomono with white rice noodles but this one came with brown rice noodles! I thought the sauce that it was in was more vinegar-ed than I’m used to but I love sour things so it was perfect for me.

Beef teriyaki

Grayson decided to get the beef teriyaki. He thought it would come with more greens but unfortunately it didn’t. But the beef was so tender and so flavorful that he didn’t mind. He’s used to having beef teriyaki with lots of sauce on it but this kind was different. Instead of having lots of sauce on top, the meat was marinated in the sauce which left it juicy and moist. Even though Grayson isn’t usually a fan of “healthier fare,” he’s willing to see what else they have to offer

Green spinach curry

I decided to get the green spinach curry. The curry wasn’t quite like Indian curry because the spice wasn’t as strong, it wasn’t quite like Thai curry either since they use soy milk instead of coconut milk which didn’t make it as creamy as it could have been and it wasn’t as sweet as traditional Japanese curry either. I’m not sure how else to describe it but it was a pretty darn tasty meal 🙂

Not only does shizen-ya serve both health AND delicious Japanese fare but they focus on keeping things organic too. So if lettuce wraps, quinoa, and brown rice are your cup of tea, this is the place to be.
