Grayson and I went to Steveston looking for a restaurant our friend recommended but being the directionally challenged people we are, we ended up walking in circles for 15 minutes. By that time we were too hungry to keep looking so we decided to just look for a place to eat. We stumbled upon Kari House which was a Malaysian restaurant that was hiding in a corner by the docks.

The interior was spacious and you got to have a pretty view of the marina. Too bad it was rainy the day we went otherwise we could of totally gone for patio seating too!

Kari House menu

The menu was pretty standard and offered a good variety of starters, vegetables, proteins, rice, and noodle dishes.

Pad thai

Grayson said that the noodles were cooked but it wasn’t the best pad thai he’s ever had. He was disappointed that there wasn’t an egg served on top and there was a sparse amount of beef in there as well. He didn’t end up feeling full and had to eat some of my noodles afterwards to fill his tummy. Which was strange because when we asked the waitress about how big the portion was…she said it could be shared between two people! Evidently not…

Sambal mee

As always, I chose to get a noodle soup dish. Hey, if it’s got warm soup, seafood, and veggies I’m all for it! The noodles are just an added bonus 😛

As you can see, the bowl was packed full of veggies and had a decent amount of shrimp in it too! I was super happy about that. The veggies weren’t over cooked either and still had a bite to them which earned this dish even more points in my books.

The rice noodles didn’t get soggy or mushy even when I got to the bottom or when I ended up giving Grayson  some. The sambal broth was definitely spicy so if you’re not into spice, this one isn’t for you. As much as I enjoyed the heat, I had a hard time detecting any depth of flavor beyond it.
